Wiring preamp inputs. Shielded cable or not?

G'day all, for wiring the inputs of phono preamps and the like I've always believed that it was good practice to use shielded cable, however I get the impression that many use twisted wires or even two untwisted wires.

I actually have tried this and it works fine, however wouldn't (shouldn't) proper shielded cable be better to prevent noise pickup and /or prevent crosstalk. Any thoughts? Regards, Felix (vk4fuq) aka catman.

Your thoughts are spot on, Felix. I've seen it done both ways, with shielded cables and just with individual wire. Depending on the sensitivity of the close-by circuits, there should be a need to keep the signal intact and that means some sort of shielding.

I have used twisted pair of CAT5 cables in B1,CNC phono,LDR volume control etc.It has a very good quality copper inside and very easy to solder to PCB.I don't like shield cable for this purpose they are of poor quality and very stiff.
