Hey all,
I am brand new to this community and it is a very exciting place! The reason I am here is that I am trying to fix a wolverine LT12 driver in my grandparents house. My grandpa installed them I believe in the early 70s and one of them does not work anymore. I did some research and it seems like the capacitor has a tendency to go, so I tried to get a look at it... and accidentally broke it off of its connection. The capacitor is really hard to get at. I have seen posts on LT12s where the circuit components were attached to the metal plate backing, however in mine the capacitor barely pokes out and there is no extra length in its wire.
Here you can see the wire barely poking out from the housing

I have ta few questions:
1) am I able to give the wire connection for the capacitor a bit of a yank to get some slack and if not, how would you all suggest going about replacing it
2) if any of you can tell me what the clump of wires in the photo below does I would be grateful. They were originally taped together and I assume were meant to be connected.

3) I am not certain what this knob does. It has a wire attached to the crossover capacitor so I assume it has something to do with the tweeter but I am not sure.

4) I am a complete newbie in audio equipment. I am an electrical engineer so I can read basic circuit diagrams and the like, however I do not know much about how the speaker systems work, and would love some introductory material. I have found it hard to find circuit diagrams or anything similar for the LT12.
I have attached some photos of my problem. If you guys are interested I can also post my grandpa's full setup once I reassemble it. He did an amazing job I think.
Thanks, and sorry for the length of the post!
EDIT:
so I tested the cap and it is busted, so my new question is what type of capacitor should I replace it with? Is there an industry preference?
