Wood Base for Dual 721

I did some swapping of bases and found that the base for a 1219 works great with a 721. This will be my new standard unit. I would assume the base from a 1229 would work also. Unfortunately, it seems that the lower mechanics of the 1219 must be slightly deeper than a 721 since the 1219 will not seat properly in a 721 base even though the suspension mounts and screw-down mounts are in the correct position. I will have to wait for the proper wood base to show up on ebay again to get something to mount my 1219 in. I will try to remove the "Electronic Direct Drive" tag from the 721 plastic base so I can mount it on my new wood base.

Can anyone tell me how the Direct Drive tag is held onto the base?

The badge has two metal pins in the back that are press fit into holes in the plastic base. With a small tapered wood wedge, or chisel, lift the left then right edges of the badge, back and forth, a little at a time, and "walk" it out.

PM me for info on walnut lumber wood bases.

Resurrecting this old thread. I just finished making a new base for my 721. I used birdseye maple and ran the sides through a dado blade to accept the mounting frame that I cut out of MDF. I made the base and cover removable and utilizes spikes for feet. Overall I am pretty happy with it. I am finishing up a second one I made out of black walnut for my friends 721 this weekend.

Wow! It's a little glossy for my taste but otherwise it's beautiful!

Solid maple? That's nice stuff.

That is definitely a new look for a wonderful table. I really love the look of the plinth, and I like what you paired it with. My MA5100 says hello. :music:

Thanks guys! I am glad you dig it. It is actually a satin finish and not gloss. I did some touch up on the top edge and it was still wet in that picture.

The base is so much more heavy and rigid than the original plastic base. I would say there has been some sonic improvement but it's hard to measure how much. Likely due to the spike feet I used helping to isolate more vibration from the deck. It is still sitting on the same three springs as it did in the original.

4P - I do like my MA5100. It's the first piece of vintage gear I ever had. I did all the cap and resistor work on it myself and it sounds great. But I really wish I had a C22 and a couple MC40s or an MC240.
