Woodworkers.... Convert this console?

I like the arches a lot too, and maybe there would be a way to keep them and build them over a door.. that sure would be a way to not worry about having to match the wood and stain... My wife kind of likes the arches, but not sure how well it would go with mission stuff..
 
Well it's a little hard to say without looking at it in person but from what I can see it shouldn't be a big deal.
It somewhat depends on how the frame is built,if the arches are doweled in or screwed in and if the screws are accessible or not if it is screwed in.
Worst case you might have to jigsaw through some screws or other metal fasteners then use a dremmel tool or something to grind down flush the remaining metal.
Using a euro type flush mount plate two piece hidden hinge with a quick release is what I'd do to mount doors on it,probably something in a 5/8" to 11/16" overlay to keep it simple.
Any cabinet shop should be able to bore a couple of hinges into the doors for you and probably supply the hinges and mounting plates.
I'd probably take out all the rails and the center mullions then put a pair of doors on each side,the hardest part will be matching the finish to some degree.
 
I figure I don't have much else to do this weekend, so I'll give the guy a call and see if I can look at it this weekend if he still has it...

I've been looking for a really nice console that would match my speakers color wise, and this looks pretty close... Would be great to be able to keep all my gear in and make the living room look a little more refined... Guess I have nothing to lose but time..
 
Yeah no kidding, but it looks to be a very well made piece... probably run well over twice that new..
 
Kinda what I'm thinking.. trying to get a hold of the wife and see if she likes this one better, or the one with the arches.. if she likes this one, try and go look at it tonight.. but that will suck if I try.. It's out by the cathedral, and we know what traffic is like in this area now..
 
That console has been up for quite awhile - at least a month, maybe more. I wouldn't worry about it disappearing. The door conversion wouldn't be too difficult, & since the piece already has 2 different colored woods an exact match really isn't critical.
But that credenza is very nice...
 
Ah.. hadn't seen that console before, but I have been looking around for a week or so.. just saw it today for the first time..
 
damn it.. the second one is sold already, BUT, they guy evidently buys sells this kind of stuff on the side and says he has a warehouse with a bunch of furniture, so will keep an eye out for me for something similar and see what he has available now.
 
I've got a Fisher console, that I haven't gotten rid of specifically becasue it opens on the front rather than the top. It's a lower end solid state model, but I wouldn't mind putting something else in it at some point. It's designed in such a way that any receiver would sit inside. It's basically just bolted to a shelf.
 
The console conversion is doable, but NOT easy. I did a similar Zenith, and maintaining structural integrity is NOT simple. The center front of that cabinet is likely the main structural member, keeping it from settling in the middle. It is also likely doweled of glued/screwed (or both) to the top bottom. Same with the arches only they are likely attached rather firmly to the top and sides as well.

I managed to change the center panel into a set of doors, but I also had decorative grooves to work with. I did not attempt to change out the speaker panels, as I had plans on making those into subs.
 
If you were originally going to scrap the arches, why not modify them to accommodate the mission style. Get rid of the radius and make it more mission. I can see it in my head, I just cannot find the words.
 
wouldn't be to difficult really to make those cover into doors so the arches are still there...but you could use art glass to replace the cloth
