Worth upgrading spring clips to binding posts?

Do you think it's worth replacing spring clips with binding posts? I'd like to replace the electrolytic caps in my Polk S4s, and I'm thinking about upgrading the spring clips while I have it apart. I'm going to use Belden 9497 speaker wire, which is pretty stiff and a tight fit for many speaker clips, so I'm thinking binding posts would be more secure.

Thanks!

An upgrade like that is always worth doing just for it's own sake, increases durability and security of the connection.

No offense, but those speakers were not one of Polk's better efforts and are not worth spending a penny on.

I agree with F1nut. I have a pair of the Polk S4 speakers. I use them as shop speakers for testing equipment. I would not make the effort to replace the spring clips with binding posts, although I commonly replace spring clips with binding posts on other, better quality speakers.

The spring clips on my S4 speakers are robust and adequate for the speakers. If anything, the spring clips are one of the best features of those speakers, considering that the plastic baffle on the speakers are cracking and falling apart.

I do like how they sound, but the cabinet's quality leaves a lot to be desired. You and F1nut are right. I'll leave them as is until I find the right deal on something new.

If you're really adventurous maybe build better cabs for those :dunno:

I had a pair in the 90's and I liked the way they sounded. the cabinets are a bit sketch though. I currently have a pair of the Polk RTi35's that I really enjoy the cabinets are rock solid. They sound a bit laid back in the treble which some complain about but I prefer, I hate bright sounding speakers.

It crossed my mind, but I'm not set up for that kind of construction. Considering the cost and time, I'd be better off getting another pair of speakers.

Yeah, they look like garage speakers, but sound much better. I like clear treble, so I don't think the RTi35's would be for me. I'm thinking about the Polk Tsi100.

People like to upgrade those terminals but the old crummy ones usually do the job for me even on higher end speakers. I don't upgrade any of mine if they're working. Most of the time it's just getting the connection made - and 9/10 times it works on the first try - and then leaving it alone for weeks, months, or years where it's installed.

Those who like super thick or exotic speaker wire often need to upgrade to fit their cables into the connection. It doesn't sound like that's the case here.

I found a great deal on a pair of Polk Tsi100 and received them yesterday. I'm happy with their sound quality and much better build quality, and they're a better fit for the shelf where I put my speakers. I'm glad I went that way, instead of upgrading the S4s. Thanks again for your helpful advice!
