Worthwhile Heresy 1 crossover mod

I wanted to share my experience doing a relatively simple crossover mod on my Heresy 1s. The goal of the mod is to lower the output of the squawker and tweeter to better match the efficiency of the woofer. The mod applies to the E crossover network on Heresy 1s. I added a 16 ohm 10W resistor in parallel with the squawker (positions 5&6 on the terminal board). On the autotransformer, I moved the wire on tap 2 to tap 1 and the wire on tap 3 to tap 2. The result is a 3db reduction in the squawker and tweeter. Since I had the crossover out I decided to replace the capacitors with Dayton 1% polys.

I am very pleased with the results. Everything seems more balanced and the bass seems stronger since it is more evenly balanced with the rest of the drivers.

Disclaimer: Please research to make sure you can do the mod on your model Heresy and that it is done correctly. I suggest doing a search on "Heresy crossover mod" and read several threads on the subject.

Interesting, thanks! I might try the same maneuver if I get my hands on Heresy's. Still enjoying the sonic difference it made, a few weeks in?
 
I will disclose that I never "disliked" the stock Heresys. I normally listen to music at a low level and enjoy the detail/clarity that the Heresys provide. It doesn't take much bass for me to be content.

I am still enjoying the modification quite a bit, I ended up moving these into my living room where they see more use. I have them up on stands, away from the corners of the room. IMO, the mod did exactly what is was supposed to do and the sound is more balanced with a lower volume in the upper frequencies.

Time will tell if I leave them this way long term. Part of what appealed to me about the mod is that it can be easily reversed.
