Your Sansui DVD recorder/VCR will probably not play the multi-channel layer of a SACD. Only CD or DVD players that sport the SACD logo on the front will play back the SACD layer of a SACD disc. Your player may play back the CD layer of a hybrid SACD disc, however, that will be two-channel stereo only. SACD or DVD-A disc player must have the decoders built into the player. Such a player will have following outputs on the back of the player: Front Left, Front Right, Left Surround, Right Surround, Center, Subwoofer.I understand the sacd thing now, my sansui DVD recorder/VCR combo probably plays them. But even if it does, what 4 outputs of the DVD player would I hook up to the 4CH Aux inputs FR FL RR RL? This is still All new **** to me, but I'm learning slowly but surely. And I really do appreciate the help.
The optical or coaxial cable connection will generally NOT carry the SACD or DVD-A signal, rather only a Dolby Digital or dts encoded bit stream. Quadraphonic era receivers do not have the capability to handle these types of inputs though modern era receivers do have the capability. If your Sansui has 2 RCA audio outs, you have to use either the optical or coaxial connection and have a decoder to send multi-channel analog audio out, I think.
That will do it for the front and rear speakers.Oh, so this setup isn't gonna be that hard them if I get the proper player, it'll just be front right and left and surround right and left, plug into the front and rear inputs on the receiver.
I do not recommend the “Y” cable option as you will be shorting together two outputs (center and sub). And as for the sub and center speakers, I could probable use one of those "Y" cables that allow two RCA cables to be hooked to one input or output
Yes, the downmixing is accomplished in the “universal player”. This is the easy and most elegant option.I take it the downmixing is done with the player itself in the setup menu?.
The answer depends on the recording. In most 5.1 channel recordings there is very little mixed into the center channel. Since your main speakers are full range, the subwoofer channel may not add much on a given recording. And if I go with the third option, would I lose a noticable amount of sound? I assume I still have bass because I use big speakers, not them little dinky things that come with surround systems now days.
