WOW! Hooking up your system to a solar generator...

I live in Hawai'i and with the weather getting worse every year, we have been getting some irritating power outages. The last one lasted a couple of days so I invested in an Anker SOLIX F3000 Solar Generator with an expansion battery with a total capacity of 6000 watts. I read that to extend the battery life, there are a few rules to follow. Do not store them in hot areas (e.g. garages). Do not fully charge the batteries and let them sit for a long duration. Do not charge over 80% unless needed and do not discharge below 20%. The batteries are rated for 4,000 cycles or about ten years of normal use depending on load.

So I figured, why not connect the generator to my tube audio system (Willsenton R8 amplifier, Polk R700 loudspeakers, Oppo BDP-95 Blu-Ray player (used as a CD transport) and FiiO Warmer R2R Tube DAC). That way I can use the batteries as needed and when it reaches 20% I just have to recharge them. Of course, this means I have to unplug the Anker from the AC otherwise the Anker will operate as a UPS mode only, passing through the 120V without charging/discharging the battery. If the power goes out, I just have to wheel the generators next to my fridge and connect it. 6,000 watts should be able to power it over three days.

My audio system went through four star-linked Richard Gray Powerline Conditioners as well as a Monster Cable HTPS7000 surge suppressor. My HT is also connected through the same AC setup.

I was pleasantly surprised to see (actually hear) an improvement in the audio quality. There was better focus in the sound. The soundstage had less smear and better detail, clarity and slightly improved depth. Surprisingly, the Anker showed that the audio system used about 300 watts but my HT system (JVC RS660 D-ILA projector, Oppo BDP-95 Blu-Ray player and Pioneer Elite SC97 AVR) used the same amount of power. I would have thought the HT system would use a lot more power. I did not see any notable difference with the HT system but I thought the contrast seems a bit better and the image had seemed a wee bit cleaner (of course, this really depends on how clean the power in your home is).

Using the audio and HT for six hours depleted the battery by 30%. When the battery reaches 20%, I just have to connect the Anker back to the AC line. It takes about one hour for every 15% increment to recharge. I think I would do one cycle of charging every three days at this rate.

There are a couple of negatives... The Anker uses ~20watts/hour just sitting there on standby or about 500 watts/day so the batteries would discharge in 12 days in standby mode. The other nitpick is that the Anker needs to be powered on from sleep mode then the AC outlets have to be enabled.

You probably don't have to spend $3000 for the same setup as me. In fact, you probably could get by with just the 2,000 watt C2000 Gen 2 for $1,000. Anker always seems to have them on sale so you could get them for hundreds less (unfortunately, they do not ship to Hawai'i so i had to buy them from the local distributor who does not recognize the sale prices.) If you decide to buy any solar generator, make sure it uses LFP batteries. Older models used lithium-ion batteries which only lasts a couple thousand cycles. Units that seem cheap or on sale may be using these batteries.

I modified the electrical circuit so that only the washing machine, electric oven, and cooktop are powered by the grid. I haven't noticed any changes in sound, but I have peace of mind regarding voltage fluctuations.
 
I too have my frontend powered by the Anker-S2000. My house is the last on the power line from the overhead transformer, so I'm sure my electric is dirty. Before I introduced the Anker, I was very pleased on how my system sounded. Now with it in my system & a few cable changes, we can hear an improvement in finer detail with my digital font end.
Changing the PC from a dedicated outlet to the Anker, A/B, just proved the Anker was the right choice. I've been toying with AI & it suggested to change my PC that powers my Innuos Pulsar, from the Kimber cable to a Shunyata Alpha v2 cable, it would be a further improvement to my system.

Living next to, or at the end of a grid can be irritating. I lived pettey close to the end of the grid up until 2018. Either heavy snow in the winter, vehicles going to fast sliding off the road in rain, snow, or from drunkenness taking out power poles, or old transformers exploding, etc. caused pretty regular outages.
I wish I could have used solar, but between all the trees and a mountain on all sides I only got direct sunlight for a short time. So I had to use a gas generator I had on its own fuse box with a switch. The only appliances I had to throw the breakers off for were the dryer, AC, and water heater when using the generator.
I have solar now on one side of my new home. I've thought about adding another 12 to 16 panels on the other side of the house and garage along with battery backup and just cut the cord to the power company. I don't know how people pay for electric here in Cali anymore without solar. I produce enough in the summer and fall that I don't get a bill, and in the winter my highest power bill averages around $150 a month. I'm so glad I put solar on this house when I bought it.

The location of the panels is temporary; I will move them 20 meters further north because there are fir trees a short distance to the south that cast a shadow over them for a large part of the day during winter.
For a few months, I relied solely on the inverter and batteries, charging from the grid for a few hours a day. But the real advantage lies in the solar panels: I use solar energy all day long and switch to battery power in the evening. By morning, the batteries are fully charged within an hour at most.

Very interesting. I could power my whole system with that. 700 bucks is much better than 40k for a Stromtank!

I understand some people's issues... My house is the very last one on the electric grid and I know it's noisy. My internet connection is also crappy. When everyone upstream from me goes online, i get dropouts and slow connections (when I moved in, the fastest speed I could get w as a paltry 20mb/s (right now it's only 100mb/s)). I'm finally going to order fiber so that should get rid of my issues as it's going to be1Gb/s.
 
Just remember that if you run down your batteries, and then lose power, you may wish you had left a bit more charge.
A person could always add a gas generator for backup. The 4K watt gas generator I used for years didnt really cost that much.
I bought a small 1K watt generator I toted around when camping in remote spots. It hasn't been used all that much. It sat for at leased 3 years with the same gas and added gas stabilizer in it's tank. When I went to start it up after all that time it fired right up.
 
I just purchased a Champion 4500 watt inverter generator from Home Depot for $780. Runs on propane as well as petrol. I plan to use the Champion ti recharge the Anker using the TT-30R connector to the Anker. I was considering a Honda but it's petrol only and only has AC outlets. The TT-30R allows me to recharge the Anker at the full 4500 watts which should recharge the Anker in a couple of hours. The Honda has a max output of 1800 watts so it would take fours hours to change the Anker and it's expansion battery.

Looks like the timing may be perfect. It looks like Hawai'i will almost be directly (it will be about 50 miles south) hit by category 1 hurricane Lala on Saturday night. The last storm we had in March had only 50mph winds and it knocked out power for four days.

I was considering getting a whole home backup but the Anker E10 system costs $12,000 (Anker E10 inverter, two expansion batteries, dual fuel generator, switch box, circuit panel). Installation costs was $4,000 plus an additional $2,000 for building permits. Without permits, installation would be within a month, with permits would take four-six months. It would be nice because this system would operate in a blackout with no impact to us. Everything would operate as normal for most of the house. The exception would be the master bedroom and the extended media room (including the 7-ton central A/C) which runs on a completely different circuit. To power those rooms as well would double the total costs to $36,000 which is prohibitively expensive, more so since we only had two extended outages in the 25 years living here. So I decided to just get the smaller power station. If the power goes out, it will keep my fridge running plus any lights that would be running via extension cords.

I used a Anker 757 and noticed an improvement and since then I have had a power station as a "UPS" since then, when I have taken it off of the power station i have had to put it back on because I do not want to lose that extra benefit to SQ, plus should the power go out music will not be a priority and the power station is very beneficial in that scenario.
 
The more I am using the system the more I am noticing the improvement in sound... It is not subtle. It's like I got a brand new system. The sound is focused, clear and with depth. The soundstage goes beyond the left and right of the speakers.

On a side note, Hurricane Lala is heading straight for the southern half of the Big Island of Hawaii but is going to veer due west so it will be about 150 mile south of the rest of the state. So it looks like i'll be in the clear other than some heavy rain but I feel for the Big Islanders... It will be a hurricane when it strikes them and weakens as it goes west but strengthening to a category 2 as it reaches the far west of the state.
 
Well, things did not go as planned. Hurricane Lala went south of us by 200 miles. But the Cat 1 storm still smacked us pretty bad. 20% of the state lost power including me. The 6,000 watt Anker will last over a day at the current discharge rate with only the fridge plugged in. The fridge uses 150 watts in standby and 300 when the compressor kicks in. This is for a two year old unit.

I’m glad I bought the $800 gas generator to recharge the Anker iso buying the $1600 optional solar panels because the forecast is rain for the rest of the week.

Each additional transfer/conversion of power incurs additional losses.
The gas generator only supplies power when running. I have three gallons which will last 15 hours. The Anker will run a day then the gas generator will take two hours to recharge the Anker. More cost effective. This way the system can last a week before I run into issues.

Correction. The fridge runs at 150 watts with the compressor running and 0 watts on stand by. So it should last three days on a full charge.
 
It will be interesting to see if the fuel estimate meets expectations with 2 hours run time but considering roughly full load during that time. That is if I'm interpreting correctly.

I think the estimates on our Honda eu2000i is 3.5-4 hours per gallon at full load.

Since the generator's full power output isn't needed 100% of the time—energy is wasted when the refrigerator isn't actively cooling or when only low-power appliances are running, yet the generator still makes noise and consumes expensive fuel—and given that my household load is only 150–250W for long periods (meaning the combustion engine pointlessly burns fuel to deliver far more power than required), I avoid using it whenever possible.
I forgot about the noise from the generator's combustion engine; I don't want any audio interference when listening to music.
 
Yeah, I get the noise would be a factor if it's interfering with critical listening.

I have not personally run any tests but I keep seeing how much (or little) fuel some of the smaller inverter generators use. At least one reporting ~12 hours/gal on his Honda with ~160W constant load in ECO mode. Intermittent should be even better but yeah, no doubt there is some breakpoint because 0 load still burns some fuel.

It's really the question of high load burning lots of fuel (relatively speaking) for a couple hours to charge the batteries and reduced efficiency through the additional AC to DC and DC to AC conversions vs. intermittent very light load sipping fuel with direct AC powering. How does that average out over time.
