Wow!!! McIntosh Mac 4200…

When they switched to the two letters and 4 numbers they always started at 1001.

They went to this number system in the middle 70s, before my time in '77. Their previous system of two numbers then letters and then some more numbers I find confusing as all get out.

We waited forever for the MAC4200 to come out, it truly seemed like a eternity.

I had the priviledge of being on the phone with Mr. Painchaud as he priced it out from the cost projections from the various departments. I could hear his old adding machine ka chinging away in the background as he added up all the projected costs.... It was only then that he knew what they would have to charge us dealers.

I hope you are enjoying yours and would expect you to get decades more out of it.

I always wondered why the MAC4300 lost 5.5 lbs compared to the MAC4200 (40 lbs) despite having slightly less power (@ 8 ohm) and without remote functions of the 4300. The speaker terminals were better on the 4300.

Do I dare make a off the cuff guess.....why not, it will allow those so inclined to research to their hearts content.

Therefore I guess a different transformer design was used in the 4300 and I weighed less.

It had two secondaries that would lower the secondary output voltage to keep the transistors in their SoA. The voltage were switched as the third speaker set was chosen.

20210719_174854.jpg I just received a MAC4200. Guy that I got it from said it started smoking. I have replaced the batteries, and turned the reciever on, I get a light for the signal tuning as well as the light above the tuner knob, however I have no display for the station, and no sound comes out of it. I have cleaned the battery terminals as well, and checked the fuses in the back of the reciever. Is there anything I can try to see why the display and the speakers outputs don't work?
