Wow! Someone is selling a NIB Marantz 8B

I have the same issue....different amp. I still have the 2 Crown DC-300a in factory sealed boxes. I posted this before and still have not decided the best course of action.

There was, and may still be, a listing on eBay that was posted for a long time.
A Marantz 10 tuner, 7C preamp and a pair of model 9 monoblocks for $40,000.

Yeap. That one was located in Staten Island which is not far form the glen rock. There was a discussion if this is a real NIB.

OK so how many of us have ever heard an 8B or ever will?

They do pop up for sale from time to time. I've seen them restored and in near mint condition for under $4K. I believe they originally sold for around $300.

I saw one once, but have never heard one.

Technically, they are advertising a NIB 8b for sale. Selling it may never actually happen at that price.

Ive heard a few 8b, mostly restored. They are nice and easy to listen to. I wouldn’t pay $10k for one. But I only care that they work properly. Pretty and original boxes don’t make anything sound better.

Thinking a little more about this. I can't understand why anyone would pay such a premium to get any old audio gear still NIB. Is there really a collectors market for NIB equipment which can never be opened without greatly devaluing it? I know that if one has original Star Wars figurines in their unopened original packaging that they are worth a lot more, but you can see the figures and the packaging artwork in mint form. An old Marantz or McIntosh is in a cardboard box. Nothing to see or appreciate. Do you put that box under a spotlight in your living room?

If someone bought this 8B for $11K and then opened it, it's value would drop to around $5K immediately, $6K at best. You couldn't even use it without paying hundreds more to restore it. Now maybe if Saul Marantz signed it?

Who knows if it even has some rust on it? Stuff sitting around in a box for 60 years can still oxidize.

That seller on Audiogon has most of their gear listed at prices nobody with any sense of the market would ever pay.

They do have good feedback, but most of their sales are for lower value items like cables.

If you go to their website you will see they have an almost unbelievable selection of outstanding gear, many assembled in excellent demo systems, but again, at truly ridiculous prices.

They have so much gear listed on Audiogon, many searches come back polluted with their crazy listings.

To me, NIB is risky on anything over 20 years old or even younger. What if that NIB box was in a moist basement or garage that had temp swings causing condensation? What if the item was shipped from factory with issues? Same reason I shy away from sealed "used" LPs. Warped, dished, pressing flaws or other items can ruin a sealed LP. At least opened in VG+ or better I know what to expect. I did buy a sealed GD American Beauty (very early pressing best we can tell by price stickers) and it remains sealed, I fear opening and being disappointed.

A still NIB Marantz 8B, for only $11K. :)

One would have to restore it right away. Or just keep it in the box for another 20 years and see what you could get for it. Given that one can purchase a great condition, restored 8B for many thousands less, I'm not sure why anyone would buy it to play it.
It's a time capsule, you can of course get a more fully realized more modern version of this Mullard 5/20 for much less as something else.
