Writing... Is it important?

Redboy

a few good watts
In an online forum where communication is limited to the written word and maybe a goofy avatar, I try to convey my personality through the words I type. I like to think that I write the way I talk, and lest you think I'm an idiot, I try to avoid writing like I never passed the third grade. This means I've got to pay attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Beyond that, I try to make sure my sentences "flow." I think you might call that "readability."

I know I don't have to prove myself here, but does anyone else feel like this is important? I'm sure there are highly intelligent people here that don't waste a lot of time worrying about spelling and grammar, so I'm not saying that a typo constitutes stupidity. But I wonder if I'm the only one thinking about this.

Maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe I just need to relax a little. What do you think?

Word up......:D

I've been on the net talking in so many different realms.. I started out with IRC ("Old Skewl" chat rooms), went to messengers and forums...

You are so right.. I think you should at least try and sound like yourself. I think you should at least try and spell out the words, and not CUL8R... but some are OK.. OMG and BRB and a few others maybe... but the way kids text.. NO THANKS...

I also try and type like I sound, so yes, I do have a lotta misspellin's..

Punctuation helps, but depending, not real important. Well, yes it is in a forum, but in chat, if you are typing a few words, not so important... I also tens to use a lot of dots.... <<< Like those... just gives more pause, or lets me think...

I can read past typo's and they are fine with me, but I try and at least make it look like I have some general idea of how to speel... hopefully others will too...

Now if you get a person that types in one giant block, looks like he just walked out of the third grade, and doesn't use one single punctuation mark, then I'll move to something else...

I don't htink you are being uptight about it, but then again, I wouldn't stress over it either... Being yourself, and human, is what it's really about...

(yes, everytin in the ablve block of text is intensional. I evan used spele chunker)

For good or ill, I tend to skim over posts that are filled with spelling/grammar errors. And there are some I can't even read.

AK is like a meeting of Pulitzer Prize winners compared to some of the other places I haunt... especially the computer forums where most posts have misspellings, complete lack of grammar, no punctuation, or even capital letters. The "u" and "ur" and other stuff like that really grates on my nerves. And these kids expect to get actual jobs someday? Good luck with that!

My two centavos.

Tom

I say excellence is a non stop job....the soul of the writing we will get after a few tens of people's posts....not necessarily by the style of any one given post...

It's very important. You want people to read your post, not get tired of deiphering your heiroglyphics. Unfortunately, and this is no excuse, but language skills are on a downward trend amongst the lower ages. If we all spoke cell-phone-text-messaging-speak then we'd be fine, but I for one still know and appreciate the versions of your & you're. "U r" has no place among real written communication.

AK has its share of grammar freaks and those who worship at the altar of Strunk & White.

Me? I try to write to make myself appear much more clever than I actually am.:D

I also like to pepper my comments with the occasional, not-so-veiled references to drinking, drugging, or whoring. This tactic has given me my "cool" aura on AK.

That being said (or written, actually), I never never use dancing bananas.:banana:

I tend to agree. However, I know that different styles of writing are perfectly legitimate if they're used appropriately, even if they're not "proper." Think of it as the written equivalent of a dialect. If the locals all speak the same dialect, and the meaning is consistently conveyed, then who are we to say that it's wrong?

That said, I think "U r" has no place in real written communication. :D

In the business I'm in, both written and spoken communication is all-important.

We practice documenting and communicating specific details for technical and support purposes. However, the sales end of it also requires being creative and using a level of "artistic licensing".

I try to communicate with people mirroring their own style. Some are rather blunt, off color, and simply speak in generalities. Others are very specific, detailed, polite, and can understand the relationships of multiple components within an overall concept.

Purposely mis-using punctuation, sentence structure and grammar often helps me convey information in a way the recipient best understands it and relates to it.

I need to be able to communicate in various styles, in other words.

Ain't that a kick in the head?

Here, I use a relaxed but usually PC style.

I like to see posts properly broken up with punctuation, capital letters, and hard returns. Why should I need to decipher where your thought process begins and ends? If you want me to understand you, type your thoughts accurately to convey their meaning.

The difference in "your" (possessive) and "you're" (contraction of you are) seems to elude over half the population of this continent.

The three "dots" is called an ellipsis, and are a single character in typesetting, not three periods. It is used to indicate a deliberate omission.

... and I'm gonna stop, I could soapbox all day about typeset. :smoke:

I try hard to always write & spell correctly, lest I be found out to be the uneducated ignoramus I REALLY am...

I like to keep my comments short and to the point. :D

Me too.

On all forums like this, people scan the posts.

So I make my comments scannable:

- short sentences

- no long paragraphs

- bullet points with full line spacing

- a little bold to emphasize a point.

- add photos whenever possible

Cheers.

Okay oz, breathe! I see I touched a nerve... :D

I'm guilty of misusing ellipses here. I know it's wrong, but it feels so good!

Redboy, proper grammatical skills are indeed something of a lost art, especially amongst the youth of today. Seems they are too busy teaching children the latest politically correct doctrine, than they are teaching them the foundation of grammar skills that would serve them a for lifetime.

Teachers are not encouraged to teach anymore. There is no local or government funding or subsidies available to a school district that fails children, which results in poor statistics for the school, thus strangling the influx of subsidies.

No one, from the Regional superintendent, down to the third grade English teacher, wants to post "Bad Numbers", for they know how quickly the faults of the entire system will be placed into their laps by the finger pointing minions of the school system.

These teachers are left with a horrible choice, pass on students to the next grade that already arrived in their own classroom with substandard skills, and are un-prepared for the curriculum presented in the next grade, Or hold them back, and face the wrath of the the parents, all the way up to the top of the chain, and in the process lose any hope of advancement in their profession, if they are lucky enough to keep the job at all.

Remember the good old days, before every child was special, victim of this or that, and as such needed to be coddled? I'm not talking about students with obvious mental or physical problems, I'm talking about kids that 40 years ago would have been considered "Normal". Now, any kid with the slightest hint of a behavioral issue get sent off to doctors and shrinks, gets pumped full of medications, and the schools are forced into building special classrooms and hiring special staff and teachers.

This is stupid beyond stupid. A kid who may be a little hyper, or possessing a slight attitude problem, needs the structure of a regular classroom, and needs to learn the respect and discipline that comes with that environment.

Loading them up on the latest trendy medicine and putting them in a classroom full of other kids who are choosing not to abide by the rules of decent society, and putting in charge of that classroom some so-called "Special Ed" teacher who is not allowed to impart any kind of discipline or negative enforcement, only furthers these kids slide down the tubes into a society that will now have to pick up their slack, for the rest of their lives.

You treat a child like they can do no wrong, suffer no actions related to their performance or behavior, and you have a child that is going to grow up to be irresponsible, un-accountable, and reliant on government programs for their food, housing, medical, and so on, because they were never taught to be responsible, or that there were consequences to their actions.

ADD had a cure long before ADD was a "Disorder".... it was called discipline.

Take two whacks to the hand by a ruler, and call me in the morning, thats what they should be prescribing to the majority of these "Special Ed" behavioral cases.
