WTF!! A Shure V15 III with MR stylus sells for $536?

That seems a bit high, but the nostolgia for these carts has been driving the prices up to the point of real money!!! You could buy a Sumiko Blue Point Special for that kind of coin...which would dance circles around that 40 year old Shure!!!

A friend of mine had a half dozen of those in a junk drawer several years ago, and chucked them during a cleaning frenzy....bet he feels like a smacked ass now!

In a word Newbie Buyer. Crazy isn't it? I'm starting to see crazy prices for common Beatles Lp's as well.
Example a Standard Mono Uk Sgt Pepper sold last week on ebay for 304 dollars.
Yes you read that correctly. It's crazy what some people will pay when it's on the bay. Sorry I got of your subject matter but i just had to post as it makes ya wonder or as the man said a fool and his money.

I found a mono copy of this, well US Capital version, sans jacket, for $1 a few weeks ago at a flea market. Looked like crap but I took a flyer on it and it cleaned up and sounds pretty good after all. A pretty early pressing too without the "is a subsidary of.." line on the label.

Thanks for taking my mind off the VN35E that I broke over the summer and am trying to replace.

Cannot comment on whether the buyer of this cartridge was sane, or not, but truth is, while the Cartridge itself may be fine, there's questionability if the NOS Stylus, and it's Cantliever Suspension is after all these years?

As for your own personal needs, don't hesitate about questioning the purchase of the Jico SAS replacement for $100, and if it will live up to the Shure Stylus, it will. This Stylus will be every bit as good, if not better than an original Shure VN-35MR Replacement.

One day, the prices of these are going to rise I bet. Better to get one now, rather than wait around for a 30+ year old original that won't sound any better. Mark

I can't even imagine my reaction if I spent that kind of coin only to get a DOA stylus.

Though I really wonder if too much is made about the whole cantliever suspension business. I've used 3 styli over 30 years old and they were all fine. The biggest danger to my needles is me, sadly.

I guess the reason I've held out on getting the JICO hoping for a genuine Shure is the same reason I like getting an early pressing of a record, it makes me happier. Why, I don't know.

There is the story of the guy who was selling apples. He was selling them for $1 million dollars each. When asked about the ludicrous price, he said "yep, but I only have to sell one". :D

Price is determined by what is agreed upon between seller and buyer. Assuming neither has a weapon, this works for me. :dunno:

Speaking of night and day difference lol:yes:
The US Sgt Pepper isn't even in the same ballpark, stadium, etc.......... when comparing it to the UK pressing.
But yes ebay sometimes gets silly people to spend BIG money on things, which is a shame because then every Tom Dick and Harry will think his V15 is worth that.

This sure (no pun) seems high for this isn't it? Pricing the cart at $100, that means the used VN35MR is worth over $400?

Is this just a abnormally high price, or is the market taking a turn up for the genuine Shure V15 stylus? I've been holding off on buying the SAS Jico hoping to score a genuine Shure HE or MR, but this seems way out there.

I would imagine members have put together wonderful whole systems at that price. The Shure V15 Type III found it's way on countless TT's and perhaps you might keep an eye out for one found that way. The lowest I have found one on a turntable is $20.00 and the most I have paid again on a TT was a little over $100.00. Of coarse the condition will vary to both ends. I'm breaking down and going to get a Jico stylus for a Shure V15 Type IV, have only heard good things about it.

I have both a uk mono in vg++ and a shure v 15 mk III.Im glad to know my pepper is going up in price but ive read that some go for over 1k.I am not a fan of the v15 III even though i own one.You can get a much better cart for alot less than 500 for sure.

Hello again my friend,
I like this thread, I appreciate you bringing topics like this here, and I do enjoy trying to bring sense to all of this, and bring up options, and alternatives.

All I can can say, is I'm happy to post, and thank you all for listening.

If you've ever visited Audiogon, there's many fine, trustworthy sellers there, and I in fact have bought numerous items, and have never, and I repeat never been disappointed yet!

Still though, even the gurus over on the "Gon" will tell you as far as Cartridge purchases go, best to buy brand spankin new.

Many dynamite cartridges for sale there every single day, cartridges like Lyra Helikons for $1000 let's say, and the seller may say it has "only" 20 hours on it. Who's to really say whether it has 20 hours, or 1000 hours on it?

Unless you have absolutely no doubts, it is better to buy new, you get to break in, see this Carridge go through it's changes, both horrible, and the not so horrible.

My comments as to whether this ole Shure was worth the money spent? IMO, no it wasn't. The buyer surely did NOT get him/herself a "bargain".

I have a 34 year old Shure V-15 Type III that I bought brand new back then. And I have a brand new Jico SAS mounted on it. Will it compare to even the 10 year old Benz Glider I had, and I used for all those years? in a simple word, no!

For $500, or so dollars, I'd rather spend the money on a new Sumiko, Benz, Shelter, Dynavector, Ortofon, AT, and many others.

There's wacky people out there who just have to have a certain item. It's why you'll see people spend $3-4K for a Marantz 2600, or $5-6K for a Sansui 35000. Mark

Mark,
I just recently bought a Dual 1229 with a Shure V15 Type III. The VN35E stylus was tweaked, however. You stated that you have a "Jico SAS mounted on your Shure V-15 Type III". My question is;
does the SAS Jico sound as good as the original VN35E (assuming that is the stylus that was on the cartridge originally) ? Thanks, for the info!
Best regards,
Rob

Problem on ebay is that too many people have way too much money, and it (money) is no object to them. The playing field is very uneven often times, and there's also a lot of, let's say not particularly thrifty, individuals on the internet.

If you are an amateur selling personal items that you no longer need, money will build up in your Paypal account. Buying things you want with it is like spending free money you never really had.
