X202B: Recurring tube socket contact issues

Hello all,

I've been having recurring issues with the tube sockets in my X202B. I've had the unit around two years and have done a thorough restoration. However, I seem to keep having volume/ balance issues that are resolved by rocking a tube in its socket or removing then reinserting.

I don't know the unit's full history, but it's not pristine by any means. Is it possible that some sockets have simply been worn out after 60+ years of life? It's mostly one power tube socket and occasionally a phase inverter or tone stage tube.

I have cleaned the problematic sockets with a dental brush and De-Oxit multiple times, and have also done a round of gentle tightening on the leaves with a tiny screwdriver. But I have not succeeded in permanently fixing these issues. Are there any more specific best practices? For example I've noticed that even after De-Oxiting, if I clean with 99% alcohol I can get some brown residue out of the power tube sockets. Is it better to not use De-Oxit in this specific place? Maybe I need to wait longer for all residue to evaporate before reinserting the tubes?

I could replace the power tube sockets or any others as needed but that seems like kind of a headache. Any thoughts, let me know, thank you!

Sometimes its just time for new sockets. Not much fun but if cleaning it doesn't keep the issues at bay you're basically left with replacing the socket(s), or just accepting that it needs regular cleaning.

Other thing to look for is cold solder on the bottom of the pins (solder joints break and cause intermittents. Suggest Re-Soldering all the socket joints and try again. If it still conks out intermittently, then go with new sockets.

OP said that was done already. Might could perhaps use it again but if they keep getting loose, thats another sign the sockets are done for.

I clean the tube pins with a small soft-bristle brass brush when I Deoxit the sockets. I've (knock wood) never had to change a small tube socket on any of my Fishers.

Maybe a round of not-so-gentle re-tensioning of the affected sockets would help somewhat. But have some new sockets handy, just in case....
