Yamaha 10" Alnico Woofers

dc270

Now Off the Reservation
These are JA2508 model woofers, cast frames, VERY well made. I got them both off Ebay for $9.00- with $25 shipping (the packing was exceptional!!). They need refoaming but WOW are they works of cast metal art!

I got these in the FedEx delivery today and inspected them, I was more than impressed with their cast frame construction and old world BIG Alnico slug magnets- much like Altec 414's actually.

These woofers supposidly came from the NS 500 model. Does anybody have any information on this model. Juding from these woofer I suspect they were well made speakers. I will incorperate them into another worthy design, but am interested to know something about their heritage/ use so I can possibly replicate some of it.

I am puzzled that they went so cheap- is there something I don't know about regarding these, or was it dumb luck?
Thanks

I'd blame it on your keen eye and ability to spot diamond in the rough.

Rest assured that after this thread circulates, and google searches for "yamaha woofer" see the meta tags, the next pair will cost you more.

Actually, look at the Altec 406-8Y woofer, that's the 10 incher with the truncated(square) mounting rim.

Anybody know the xover point for these? I got the cab dimentions, not sure about what tweeter model used.
Somebody out here must have had them at one time.....I hope! After all it IS a Yammy ya know, about 1976+ year, 2 way, 24" x13" x 12".....

1.8kHz for the X-over.
JA-056A - Beryllium dome tweeter.

These speakers are very nice sounding. I actually just sold a pair of woofers exactly like the ones you bought a while back. I found a pair of old stock woofers with cloth surrounds which I've heard are much more rare (not in US?). Not that it really matters except for longevity.

They sold cheap because most people with a budget buying Yamaha's good old vintage speakers focus on the 690's (I,II, or III), the rest go for the gold with the NS-1000's or 1000 Monitors. The NS-500's are simply overshadowed even though they are great speakers. Good for you, right? :D

Anything else you need just ask, I've gathered quite a lot of Yamaha's beryllium driver line information over the years.

Hi DC,

I have a pair of NS-500's which I have refoamed. They DO sound quite nice, especially the treble from the Be tweeters. The woofer cone diameter is an odd one and I had a hard time finding surrounds to fit. In the end I cut a small section out of a surround with a slightly larder diameter and glued the ends back together. I also had to trim some from the OD flange of the surround since the woofers have a small rabbett in the frame under the black rubber trim piece. In the end all worked just fine.

The woofers look pretty nice don't they.

Thanks for the information here. I found a pair of JA 0516A that were said to fit the NS500 model on Ebay. They are $$ at $50 each plus another $10/ ea for shipping!!

I am a big Morel tweeter fan and may look at those as an option.

Any diagrams of the network?
Thanks again all

DC,

The crossover is a bit of a mystery to me. Can't find anything on the web and posts here haven't resulted in anything. My crossovers are inside of a plastic form and filled with potting compound so nothing is visible.

If you're looking for a project for the Yamaha woofers, you might consider the Econowave project here on AK. OTOH, the tweeters on the auction at $50 ea is a resonable price, but you've got the crossover question to answer. Ewave is complete. I can give you the original box and port dimensions if you like.

Have fun,
John

Thanks John-
appreciate your help here. Now that I think of it maybe Econowave might be pretty darn do-able here! I have all the drivers/ horns already!

I kinda thought a cast frame big Alnico anything would bring a crowd! I have looked over the driver very well and they look bullet proof to me! I did get lucky and find a guy on Ebay willing to sell the xovers cheap- gotta get back with him.
Thanks for the reply!
