Yamaha 6115H horn question

Tube Radio

Super Member
The ,local skating rink I go to has four Yamaha 6115H horns.

While diagnosing their sound system I found two of the horns had no drivers. Found one driver and it is a Yamaha JA6681B, but it has no diaphragm.

Any idea on what would be a good replacement compression driver?

Sort of a loaded question. What passband are they being operated in?

That Yamaha driver is kinda funky and no longer supported, it's really a small format driver with a cast nose on it that adapts it up to a 2 inch throat. In some apps they were crossed fairly low(500hz). If they need to run that low, the shortest path is going to probably be something like JBL 2445's out of the used market. But, that's a LOT more driver than the originals, in a passive system they will need to be attenuated more than the yammies were.

If a crossover point of 1200hz or so could be used, i'd probably go with the venerable Eminence PSD-2002 and 1 to 2 inch adapters.

The original crossover point best I can tell was most likely 800Hz.

I too thought of that eminence driver as I use them on a pair of Altec 811B horns and they always sound good.

I forgot to take a picture of the inside of the cabinet. looks like there may be a wood brace between the driver and horn, but im not sure.

I too thought of a higher crossover point, but these will be used with BFI Bullfrog speakers with a 15" front horn loaded driver and a slot port facing the front of the speaker. Most likely similar to some Altec designs and I don't know if those speakers will play up to 1.7KHz or a bit higher.

Whatever I use I will need some way to protect the compression drivers from damage.

I thought of a passive crossover, but each speaker has an active crossover that is two way stereo or three way mono so if I use another amp per speaker I can get a three way active crossover.

Apologies for not following up on this sooner.

The big eminence seems like a lot of driver for the money. But, it could be overkill in terms of both cost and performance for the application.

While it's a little un-orthadox, if you need to go lower and handle more power than a single PSD-2002 can manage, you could double them up with a dual throat adapter. From the economy perspective, you can source used 2002's often for around 25-30 bucks, that's about what replacement phragms can be sourced for, and new 2002's are around 60 each.

Hadn't thought about that, but I don't think there's enough room in the cabinet for two drivers and that adapter.

Unfortunately I believe the cabinets used for the midbass will not go above 800Hz so I gotta have that crossover point.

I have no experience with that large format Eminence driver. At it's entry fee, you can source clean, used, perfect working JBL 2445's, and that's the route i would encourage anybody to take unless it's a matter of needing several asap. Good working 2445's can be purchased for as little as 75-80 bucks each on that auction site if you are patient and use due diligence.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, apologies. Altec 288K/291K is 1.4 inch. Less expensive but harder to find would be an Altec 906 which is actually an EV DH-1012 with a shorter nose to arrive at 1.4 inch throat dia..

906? I know about 902,908 and 909 but that's a new one for me. Not even made by Altec even, they should have given it a different series number. Learn something new every day.

I'll have to look into those.

The 906A only goes to 13KHz which I feel is no good for the intended usage.

I really don't want to use any vintage drivers like that unless diaphragms are readily available and not very expensive given this will be for a skating rink.

It's more or less needing a driver that can withstand some abuse and keep going.

JBL 2447 is a possibility, they're going to cost more than 2445's but they are probably still a top value where price vs performance is concerned.
