Yamaha A-1 integrated amplifier

side note, regarding the original trade or whatever was going on, which marantz was it? what model.

I own a few of the Yamaha A-series amps and love them to death, but I dont see a 70wpc yamaha being worth a marantz of similar power.

just my 2 cents.

The original question was from 2002, so I hope it's been taken care of by now.

The A-1 is it's own thing, and I'd actually trade just about any Marantz SS (except maybe an 18?) for one.
 
Oh, I didnt realize it was THAT old of a post, but I did know it was already resolved as per another thread stating such.

I was just curious what model it was.

The DSP-A1 mentioned a few posts up is something completely different. The A-1 sounds fantastic. I kind of go back and forth on my other Yamaha gear (CA-1010, CR-2020 and other's that have been sold) but the A-1 stays. The Marantz gear certainly might win in the looks category if black minimalism isn't your thing (The A-1 isn't black plastic, though...it's very heavy). I had a 2275 but it's really not something I could compare to the A-1 as the sound is just so different that it comes down to personal preference. Neither were bad by any means.
 
With the exception of the cool M series light up buttons, that looks similar in nature to my A-1000. I wonder if the sound is comparable too.

either way, If I ever see one of these in goodwill, I'd be all over it. I like the big glowy buttons.

I actually found mine at a thrift store in a pile of cheap black plastic stuff. I didn't really know what it was but then I picked it up, realized it weighed about 5 times what I thought it would, then spied two transformers inside. I bought it on that merit, found the T-1 tuner in a pile of junk nearby and after removing the giant Playboy bunny sticker from the top had a very nice integrated amp. I normally run separates but this fills in every now and then in my bedroom system and I always enjoy it.

I don't know how it compares to the later A-1000 but this is a pretty special unit to my ears. It's definitely a case of what's on the inside mattering most. The direct signal path is evident in the sound, and the phono stage is one of the better ones I've heard on a vintage unit. All in all something definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

I dont (THINK) my A-1000 has 2 transformers in it, its been a while since ive had the top off, but it does have 4 big caps in it. (and weighs quite a bit, as well).
So it may be comparable.

But I will say this, I've had it for .. I guess 6 months or so now?, and unfortunately I havnt found anything better yet. why is this unfortunate ? it isnt. but im also always looking for that next upgrade, and I just cant find anything I like better.

a more powerful version of this thing would be nice, but as far as sound goes, in my (albeit, limited) experience, ive yet to find something better.
 
I had an A-1 that I bought new. I sold it to a 'equipment challenged' friend of mine maybe 15 years ago.

I really liked the amp. Sounded great. Originally drove 4-Large Advents and then my K-Horns.

i replaced it with an RXV1070 which back in the day I liked. Now, I wish I had the A-1 back.

If you like the Yamaha sound but think you might want more, I would recommend ditching integrated ideas and going straight to separates. Above a certain power level, I don't see the point in having everything in one box when you don't have to, and there are any number of Yamaha separates series to choose from. I had a C-80 preamp that was very nice and much more flexible than any of the preamp sections of most any integrated amp. Plus its much easier to move separates than a giant heavy integrated or receiver.

Just a thought.
 
well, i've got an m-4. its the same power rating as my a-1000 tho.
I dunno, I might do that. im looking at buying a truck soon so I wont be actively looking for specific gear for a little while. who knows though, my next major upgrade may only be 1 trip to goodwill away.

I was thinking the same thing. Well, the Genie is out of the bottle now because a perfectly tame thread about the A-1 with no actual dollar value discussed has now been threadcrapped all to hell. Pity.

I asked about the yamaha to find out something about it soundwise....as well as pricewise on the secondhand market.

I can pick one up voor around 160 euro (200+$)(i am in europe)...but the metal flap in front of the knobs is missing (someone broke it and threw it away...ouch) otherwise in good cosmetic and technical condition (black) Good buy? Is it scarce or has there been lots exported to US and Europe?

Sorry moderator for using an old threat on the yamaha A-1 for my question.

I've got a DSP-A1 that is in perfect condition sitting in the box looking for a home. I also have the matching tuner. These were replaced with the RX-Z1 when the need for component switching came about. (The tuner in the RX-Z1 sucks compared to the older stand-alone tuner. :sigh: )

You might go in a edit your post to say something other than "Yo Guys I Got This Item For Sale" or what ever words you use to that effect without saying them in that order. Really easy to do.

Never said anything like that, nor did I say it/they was/were for sale. I said they were looking for a new home. I guess they won't find one here and will contine to collect dust.

Anyway, anyone who quoted it would now also have to go back and remove that section of their quotes, or it still shows.

As I said, if it is out of line, the Mods can delete it.
 
I wanted to buy one of those when they first came out but didn't have the dough.

They were a sort after unit and well regarded.

well..."looking for a new home" very clearly implies either a sale or a giveaway, both of which are prohibited in this forum. if you want to give it away, there's a section in Member Classifieds for that, and it's free to post ads:

in the meantime, you can simply edit your original post in lieu of deleting it. to completely delete a post, i believe you must be a subscriber. the mods will eventually get to it on their own most likely, especially if someone flags it, but they have lives too and are usually pretty busy.
