The general model is not affected. I have a general model and confirmed by Yamaha not a problem.

my C501 is 0.22uF ..it is kind of cracked..
 
Yeah, I think if you had it open and on the bench, replacing the cap with a modern X2 would be a "Stitch in time..." .
 
Just wanted to put in that, while Yamaha may state that this is not an issue with the general or American models, 2 AKers (myself, and N8) have had this happen to our "unaffected" models in less than a year. FWIW, the cap in my model is also a .22uF, as opposed to the .47uF mentioned B4.

Could I replace the 0.22uF to a 0.47 uF X2? what would happen if I do that??

It is a general model.
 
Hey guys!
Just got off the phone with yamaha. The replacement part for the M-70 can be ordered through Yamaha. With standard ground shipping it ran me just less than $17 dollars for the cap (significantly cheaper than Newark, which charges a 20 dollar handling fee on top of the cost of the cap). I was also told that Yamaha has a new parts website where you can order replacement parts directly from yamaha, see link below:

Paper oil cap failure

Just had the same problem with my M-70 .The paper oil cap near the power supply did fail on mine . I got a replacement cap for it but I'm not sure which way it came out of the circuit board. Does it matter which way I re install it? Is it directional? Thanks

Film caps are non-polar. It doesn't matter . Is your replacement X2 or XY rated ?

Hey all,
Even though the last post on this thread was many years ago, I thought it would be worth me giving my 5pence worth.
I have recently inherited a Yamaha A-760 (240v version) and had the safety recall repair done FoC here in the UK.
That's very impressive from Yamaha given this unit is well over 40years old.
Now all I need to do is get the annoying incandescent bulbs sorted and there seems to be something not quiet right with the Phono channel. After that, happy vinyl days ahead :)
 
Not that it matters at this point, but these units are between 41-43 years of age. Soon to be 42-44. Damn I'm old! Lol

Thanks for your reply. Tell me about it, I recall it like it was yesterday when my Dad bought this very amp, wouldn't let me near it ! Just as well though as it's still in mint condition. Now I'm feeling old.....

Question for you, given your username, I thought who better to ask......
As part of my Yamaha A-760 restoration project, I was thinking of adding a fan for the heatsinks. So, to that end, should the fan blow cool air towards the heatsinks or extract heat away from the heatsinks? What you reckon?
 
Well from what I see most manufacturers do is they suck the air into the cabinet. Having the airflow pass through them.
 
Fun fact about me... I personally don't have any units with fans, OE or added on afterwards. I only get units that have enough heat sinking to do well on convection only. Hence my handle. :biggrin:
 
Yamahas usually have enough to do well without. Unless you stack something on top because you have no choice.
