Yamaha A-S3000 VS Luxman 505ux

If it is like my L-505u, yes, the meters would still work. Using a L-550ax as a pre-amp only would be ludicrous.

I need more oomph from an amp, which I'm not sure that I'd be getting from the 550ax, but I like its preamp capabilities. Also the looks.

Why? The option is given by Luxman. Say I get it used for half the price. Even then? I can add a poweramp (which one?) and still be within the limits of a new 550ax cost. I'm only worried about the heat level it develops during hot summer days. Can some owner chime in with this info?
 
I used my Luxman both whole, as a preamp-only, and as a power amp only, so I'm not belittling the idea in general. But the 550's power amp section is its main strong point - its reason for existence, and to waste all that heat, even more than it's ordinarily wasted, just seems ... well, you know the word I used. I suppose it would make more sense in winter. ;)

The reviewer said the A-S3000 "lacks a degree of dynamic grunt" and its "rhythmic precision could be better". That was damning enough to give it a 3 star (out of 5) rating.

I guess my audio tastes aren't quite refined enough. I don't know what is meant by rhythmic grunt or rhythmic precision or how that would sound.:idea:
 
The German magazine "Stereoplay" compared both amps. AS-S3000 won not only by a margin. The Class-A Luxman needs efficient speakers. The A-S3000 will drive virtually any speaker, it is very powerful. If you take a look inside you will notice a difference in construction, too, the Yamaha being state of the art.

A typical British magazine review, I would say. They prefer their home made feeble amps where you have to spend a lot of money for power supply upgrades to get them halfway running.
 
I prefer their feeble amps as well. They sound better to me. We are all different.
