Yamaha Beryllium Mids

Folks,

Looking for information and opinions on the Beryllium mids used in the Yamaha NS-1000/2000 speakers from the 70's and 80's.

- What are the technical differences
- How do they compare sonically
- Are they interchangeable (especially from a dimension standpoint)

Specifically, looking for info on these:
JA-0801 from the NS-1000/1000M
JA-0802A from the NS-2000
JA-0803 from the NS-1000X

Appreciate your help.

Love both the 1000x & 2000 Be mids. The 2000 is considerably warmer and more lifelike in vocal reproduction. The 1000x also seems to be more sensitive to room placement.

Even thought the Be dome may be the same dimension, there may be differences in output level which are specific to the cabinet design of each model. If you swap, the sound image could become unbalanced.

NS-2000 drivers are much improved over the drivers used in all varieties of NS-1000's. There are very few being offered for sale, and those that are available on Yahoo! Japan are godawful expensive.

while my listening experience with NS-2000 is rather limited, I did hear all three of the speakers in question.
I believe it is rather a function of the network and the cabinet these drivers reside in,rather than one being necessarily better than the other.

One could argue that Yamaha would have learned and improved the 1000/M drivers for the later 2000 and the 1000x, but I do not see how the NS-2000 driver would be necessarily "better" than it's later sibling from NS-1000x?? My gut feeling is that if the later two (JA-0802A and JA-0803) are swapped, the difference would not be noticeable.

Cross-over likely. The Be's are sealed on the backside. So cabinet cavity really doesn't come into play other than position of drivers on the cabinets.

Whatever they did with the 2000's, it's magic. CD's I previously thought were dead, now sound alive. The 1000x's probably have a little more punch in the mid-range but the 2000's sound less cluttered in the middle and soundstaging is bigger and wonderfully defined. I won't part with any of my Yamaha speakers but the 2000's have really upped the bar.

Given the age of the components of all of these drivers (caps, etc) I wouldn't be certain about the validity of direct comparison of any one pair of drivers against another.

Well considering that my NS-2000's are all original and my NS-1000x's were redone by hifido only about 3 years ago, the NS-2000's should need a ventilator to push air. Still though the 2000's are the clear winner.
