I’ve had the Yamaha CA-610 for about a year. Got it from someone cleaning out their basement for renovations. Cleaned it up, dusted it and overall it’s been good. Some scratchyness is on the volume and balance but overall good. Solid clean sound.
I decided to shell out some money for some nice speakers to go with it and bought the KEF Q150s on a good sale. I set them up and get up to about volume level 4 and the speakers start distorting. I call my buddy up and borrow his amp to see if it’s the speakers or the amp. With his amp, which has similar specs but not vintage, I was able to crank the speakers with no distortion. They were clean and hitting hard.
So I’m a bit disappointed that the Yamaha CA-610 can’t seem to handle these speakers at loud volumes and really punch them. The question:
Is this a fault in my amp that I could fix / refurbish or is it unreasonable to think this amp could power the KEF Q150 at loud volumes? The speakers themselves are rated at 10-100 watts. Does that mean I need to get a CA-1010 to really drive these speakers?
