Hello AK.

I recently bought my dream amp, a CA2000. Sadly one of the meters appears to be cooked. It's such -20db and doesn't move at all. I tried to loosen the screw a little and tap the needle to see it woukd move but it seems pretty well sad. Also, the screw seems way more brown (burned? Rust?) than the other side which works perfectly. See pictures..

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement VU meter for my Yamaha CA2000? I understand that it's the same part used in the CA2010, CA1010, CA1000iii. Any leads would be very greatly appreciated.

Think I know the amp, imported from Japan by Nik then later sold to a guy in Qld, a very nice sounding amp.

Meter looks nasty, like something bent, you could try some low pressure compressed air in the air gap. You could try connecting to a 1.5V battery then slowly move up to a higher voltage, don't rush to 9V, any moovement at all. Is meter frozen or is it just the zero position is incorrect.
 
Thanks for the info. I will try that. In answer to your question it's zero point has moved but it isn't moving as freely as it should :( I wonder if something further up the chain has caused this and might damage a replacement meter if/when I find one -

Hopefully some of the guys that have tinkered with the meter drive will chime in.

I'm thinking mechanical damage. Recall that there is a meter calibration procedure in the service manual, maybe walk through that, measure voltages sent to both meters to make sure excessive volts are not being sent. OK you wont be able to calibrate the damaged meter, just check for a sensible signal from the IC.

Thanks heaps for all the info. Yes, I agree the VU is probably done. Appears bent and burned. Will check the voltage going to it. I'm also gonna try to find a parted out model - if anyone has any leads to the part or wants to go halvies in buying a spare parts one with me, please let me know. They're such beautiful looking and wonderful sounding amps.
