YAMAHA CDC models and CDX 700u skip randomly

What causes a CD player to randomly skip? Specifically older YAMAHA like the CDC 5 disc carousel and CDX single disc models. I've tried leveling the player, tilting the player, brand new CD's, compressed air, program play, random play, allowing the player to warm up, using a fan to keep it cool, I've timed the skip intervals looking for a pattern....all w/o success.

decouple the player
 
Regrease, new spindle motor and new laser fixed my CDX-400u. Works without issue now and even plays CDR's (which it would not before).
