Yamaha CR-1040. Can I justify spending $ on it?

I picked up a CR-1040 on FB Marketplace for $25. It’s dirty, lights aren’t working, scratchy pots but it works! I know the 1040 has some very hard to find, if not impossible to find parts. However, I think I could fall in love and make it a daily driver. My question is, should I put money into bringing this back to its original glory? Or, is it too much a gamble? Should I sell and make some money to put towards something else (Yamaha)? I have a minty CrR-600 but would like something with more power to drive my ADS L810’s.

I agree. If it works, then make it reliable. If it were mine and a keeper, I would recap it, clean the pots and switches, the works! I actually prefer the looks of the CR-x40 series over the x20 series, even though the x20 series are a lot more service friendly and not filled with unobtanium parts. I have a mint condition CR-840 with a dead amp. Hate to have it just sitting on the shelf but there is no easy fix for the damn pre-driver modules. Someday I will get around to it.... At least I can be happy with my CR-2020, fully recapped and working great.
 
I'm just the opposite. I prefer the looks of the CR-x20 series, over the CR-x40 series. Expecially, the brushed stainless steel faceplates, and the bright knobs & switch paddles.
Back in the day, a buddy of mine wanted a CR-1020, just like the one I had. But I believe it was late 1979, and the only thing he could fine was a CR-1040. So he bought it. I think he always regretted not being able to get a CR-1020, because I think he really wanted that model - but had to settle for the 1040. It just had a whole different look and feel to it. Just my hubble opinion.
 
......not to mention the fact that the CR-xx20 series have the beautiful mahogany vineer wood cabinets, which looks so much more classy than the plastic cabinet on the CR-1040's.
 
The xx40 model to get is the 2040. No unobtainable parts as far as I've heard. Great receiver too. Plenty of power. 120wpc. Good tuner and phono.
