Recently purchased a very good example of the CR-420 and have been using it the past few weeks after a deep cleaning (dedust, DEOXIT, F5, etc.). The unit works fine except for the tuning knob, which is very difficult to turn. The string looks OK and wound correctly, but there remains a lot of resistance. Is there an adjustment or lubrication that needs to be made to the tuning unit itself? Note, I can get good reception. Any ideas would be a big help!

Welcome aboard.. The tuning knob shaft assembly needs to be disassembled . You will find a sticky green mess.( brass oxidation and old grease ) This needs to be thoroughly cleaned from all surfaces with a solvent like acetone. Then reassembled with a light coat of white lithium grease. It will spin like a top afterwards.:thumbsup:

Many thanks! My first foray into vintage receiver maintenance. The mechanical stuff doesn't put me off, so I will get to this in the next 2 weeks. However, on the electrical side I am trying to work up a bit of courage to recap/revise a Pioneer SX-82E that I purchased a couple of weeks ago ($135). That too looks great cosmetically and does work, but will need some serious TLC before I use it (i.e. OEM caps-no visible "leaks" but very old, etc.). A 21-tube beauty (all original) that is a tangled web of point-to-point electronics (c.1965) underneath. More like brain surgery than electronics repair. At least it came with all of the original documentation. The guy who sold it to me had it via a family member, so the history is known since new. A lucky find.
However, I will probably start with a recap of a Nakamichi SR-2E, to get my soldering technique and preps up to snuff, before taking on that serious project.
In any event, the Yammy works fine for my typical use-case (DAC to AUX-input) and once I get this tuning shaft sorted, will be a real gem.
Again, a BIG thanks for setting me on a good path here.
