Yamaha Cr1020 vs cr820

Hello. I just bought model cr820 and I like the sound from this receiver. The sound is clean and headphone amplificator is better than I expected. I am thinking already to upgrade and buy Cr 1020 but only if there's a better sound coming from this unit. So please give me some feedback if you have listened these 2 receivers.

How about the tuner. Is better in the cr1020, more sensitive , it will find more radio station than Cr820?

I think so.Big difference between the 820 and a 1020. But I'd be shooting for a 2020 or a 2040. Or the holy grail 3020.
 
I have a 820 (serviceable) and a 2020 (unserviceable ... for now :beatnik: ):biggrin:
 
I read about Cr -**40 series they have stk inside and I prefer a non stk unit.
So how it's the sound different in cr-1020 compared with Cr 820? You know like is more warm or iven more neutral, stereo separation is better or the same? How about the soundstage between these two?

I understand from @avionic the tuner is better so this is good thing , I really like to spin the tuner knob :) .

The 2040 is all discrete, no STK and is indeed the best sounding of the ones I have owned which included the CR-800/1000/1020. It has fewer inherent problems than the 2020, of which I have had a couple that needing much work. The 2040 is the one to shoot for IMO.
 
620 is preferable. Cooler looking. Not so gaudy. They all sound the same anyway, so smaller is better.
 
@ZOOM I like those LEDs from Cr 1020 and cr 2020 , they add a professional looking.

Have cr 1020 separate amplification for right and left channel? I saw pictures from inside of this model and is similar with a dual mono amp construction but without dual transformers. Just asking.
 
I love my 1020 which to me is the sweet spot of the lineup, though I sure wouldn't mind owning a 3020, what a beast...
 
No cr 1020 , 2020, or 2040 in my country for selling at this time, so I'm thinking to change the light bulbs from my cr 820 with LEDs. When you guys will make this change on your receiver please have patience and make a video tutorial with this. I don't know anything about electronics repairs.
 
i had a Cr 1020 for lots of years, fine receiver, never gave me a problem., but the output was too small for my Infinity RS II speakers. So after many years 1978- 1997 , I sold the CR 1020 for $150 and bought Yamaha cx-2 pre amp at 50 % off list (son worked at the now defunct the Wiz) and an acurus A-250 power amp that has 250 watts @ 8 ohms, 350 @ 4 ohms.. Better bass
better sound stage. But for most people w/o mega speakers , the Cr-1020 is fine
 
I did the exact same thing. I started with a cr-820 as my very first receiver. I eventually got a second one to run a different set up. I then had dusted off a cr-600 that my dad had. But I eventually stumbled across a cr-1020 on craigslist and instantly bought it. I would say I feel like the tuner is superior. I think it pulls in channels clearer than the 820. In fact I thought the 600 pulled in channels better than either of the 820's I had. But I would take the 1020 over all of them. I initially had my boston acoustics t830's hooked up after I made the upgrade. I didn't notice much difference. The receiver clearly had a lot more power, but those were pretty efficient towers. When I picked up some 4 ohm BA A400's and hooked them up, I could certainly tell the difference between the receivers. So I would absolutely recommend the 1020 over the 820 in terms of sound and especially with the tuner. Also the real walnut veneer is much prettier than the woodgrain vinyl on the lower end vinyl.
