Yamaha CT-600 Questions ?

Hello Everyone,

I just picked up a CT-600 and had a couple of questions about its features! First of all the output level knob, what is it for ? Also the muting on/off switch, the high blend ? I don't notice any difference on either selection!

The output level knob is just that...output level. It sets the level sent to your amplifier. The center click / stop sets a calibrated output which is detailed in the specifications (in the owner's manual).

If you aren't hearing any difference in volume when you use it then there must be a problem. What amp are you using and what level is the volume output set at on both components?

Same comment about the muting on/off switch and the high blend switch. You should hear an interruption in sound when muting is on. The high blend switch is a bit more subtle and you'll want to check if you have a similar function switch on the amplifier. It may be overriding any change in high frequency blend from the tuner.
 
Ya, there is no difference when I turn the output level. The muting does not cut off the sound. But the high blend has a slight differences in the higher frequencies! The PreAmp is an AMC Pro 7 :)

I suggest that you look at the rear connections on your tuner. You will see that there are two outputs provided - "fixed" and "variable". If you want to use the output level knob, you will need to use the variable output RCA connections.

Also, you may have noticed that the dial face is not lighted - this is normal. The only light is provided by the tuning cursor as it moves across the dial.

hehe :) Thanks, those where exactly my next 2 questions. Im going to try it out right now ! And yes it must be under the radar. Because it really sounds good :)
 
Did you get the answer about high blend? If not, it's a trick to improve signal to noise level without switching to (completely) mono reception. It blends the high frequencies to mono, cancelling out most of the hiss. The midrange is still stereo, so you get to have your cake and eat it too -- sort of -- on borderline signal-strength stations.

I reckon it is an output -- see page 14 of the manual, it was for an FM Quad (4-channel) decoder. I don't think Quad FM ever quite caught on ;-)

EDIT: A detector output could be used to drive an external FM MPX stereo decoder... but that's upstream of the IF strip.

FYI and FWIW, this is what the guts of a CT-600 look like. Not my images; not my tuner. I actually don't have a CT-600 :-P (although Ido have a CT-800 and a CT-610II)...

Okey-dokey; that CT-600 appears to have four gangs for FM (i.e., four air-variable capacitor tuned circuits in the FM tuner) and three for AM.

The gangs are gangs (groups) of vanes in each section of the air-variable (tuning) capacitor.

I annotated the photo to show the AM gangs in green -- heh, gangrene ;-) -- and the FM in red. HTH, as they say :-)

Now, as to the CT-800 vs. CT-610II.

The CT-610II has really been "value engineered" (i.e., cheapened and taken "downmarket"!) compared to the CT-600. The CT-610II has only three tuned FM sections and two tuned AM sections -- and a lot of empty space in its big ol' cabinet!

That said, the CT-610II sounds... pretty good. My sense of that may be very colored by the fact that it matches my purchased-new CA-610II and the fact that the CT-610II cost $30 (which is about right, by the way).

I haven't really done a fair comparison to the CT-800 I have, since the CT-800 was an inexpensive, as-is purchase. It works but it is safe to say it's not operating at peak performance. The CT-610II is also "as purchased", but it is also like new and seems to be in good tune. My rubric for "in good tune" is a good sounding FM stereo signal with good quieting when the center-channel meter is centered. This obviously makes some assumptions about the accuracy of the "center tune" meter and isn't very quantitative, nor very scientific, but it's a decent "rule of thumb" I think!
