Yamaha CX-A5000 vs RX-A3060, any help from the A/V experts?

I've been using a CX-A5000 for about 6 years with several Threshold power amps. I just picked up a RX-A3060 for a second system and am now wondering if the RX-A3060 might be the better unit. It's hard to tell from the Yamaha site and the 300 page manuals. I was hoping there might be a few Yamaha experts who could offer advice.

If using the RX-A3060 in my main system, I'd use the pre-outs, so I'm not concerned with the amplifier section of the 3060.

I'm interested in video quality / features, DAC, preamp / audio quality / features and anything else you think is worth mentioning.

They are much more alike than different. The 3060 is a couple of years newer but that only really matters if it has (or doesn't have) a feature that you actually can use (Atmos, bluetooth, HD radio, balanced connections, etc) so you really need to dig into the features that matter to you. I have the newer CX-A5100 and the older RX-A2010 so I'm pretty familiar with the massive number of features on these units.

I'm going to give the 3060 a try. I'd like to give Atmos a go and see how I like it. I think my room is a little small for all the speakers gut I have a set of ceiling speakers already installed. It should be an easy hook up.

At least for an Atmos 5.x.2 setup it doesn't really increase the footprint as the ceiling speakers go between the front and surround speakers. Going beyond, yes, additional space behind the seating position is generally in order for a proper layout.
 
Exactly! Plenty of room up front .... if I squeeze any more speaker between the sides and rears, I don't think I'll be able to identify one from the other!
 
Looking at your set up, I think the cat cradle is the ideal seating position!
My cat is jealous ... about not having the best seat in the house or such a cool perch.

Go figure. My cat is the same. He has a nice cat bed but would rather stretch out over 2 computers with USB hardrives on top and fall asleep. If there was such a thing as a cat chiropractor, he'd need one.

From the picture it looks like you are running Center, 1 Sub, 2 Front, 2 Surround (Side), 1 Rear and 2 Atmos Front speakers? Is that correct?

I ended up doing Center, 2 Subs, 2 Front, 2 Surround (Side), 2 Rear and 2 Atmos Front speakers. The Atmos Front were already installed in the ceiling, I think they are too far front, I can't really distinguish them from the front speakers. Although it's only been a week in use, maybe I'm just not listening to the right source material.

Interesting thing about the 3060 is Yamaha calls the Atmos Front speakers Front Presence speakers. Is that just how Yamaha does it and when watching a movie that utilized Atmos processing those speakers are used as such or is there some setting I'm missing?

Almost correct. I have 2 subs. Look carefully at the first picture. There's a reason why the end table towards the back wall is pushed out a little. :p My take on the ATMOS/Presence speaker thing is that they are used for ATMOS purposes on an ATMOS soundtrack.Yeah I know, thats kinda obvious. The Presence thing is a matrixed function that I think you have to enable through a setting. My older RX-V1900 has Presence capabilities too but if not used as Presence are used for zone2 or zone 3 speakers instead. Cant remember exactly which zone.
