Yamaha GT-750 motor noise

I just got a GT-750 at a good price - but! When I switch it on there's a noticable scraping noise coming from the platter. It reaches speed ok, the quartz lock indicator comes on and the sound from the jazz album I put on was fantastic. However, a friend of mine who was over, no audiophile but a mechanical engineer, said it sounded like a bearing needed greasing.

Has anyone any experience with this unit? Would it be easy to open up the bearing and lubricate it?

*PS - I can't find the source anymore - but I seem to remember reading that the Yamaha motors need a particular type of lubricant

Well I cleaned out the old oil and added fresh oil (from Pro-ject) and the scrapping oil has gradually diminished and disappeared.
