When I got back into audio about 10 years ago, my first power amp was a Yamaha M40. I picked it up in Toronto on one of my visits there. I used it along with a Sony TA-2000F preamp, and it was really nice. Lots of power to drive the Infinity's, Camber, Kef, and Celestion Ditton speakers I was finding in those days. One evening, I went to check out a pair of Celestion Ditton 15s. The owner also had a bunch of other equipment for sale, and I bought a Sansui B2101 Power Amp and a Philips GA-312 turntable. And thus started my love of Philips turntables. Once I got the Sansui, I decided to let my M40 go. I figured I had enough power amps.
That was a mistake. About a week after letting the M40 go, I finished repairing a pair of Camber 2.5 speakers. I was so happy because I had had another pair before, and they sounded great with the M40. Well, it didn't sound so great with the B2101. I sold the Sansui within a year of getting it, and I've been looking for an amp that was comparable to the M40 ever since, for a price I was willing to pay. In the meantime, I have been using a Sansui AU-9900, which does a good job, but it isn't the M40. The M40 just seemed to drive every speaker I have used except for the big ones like Kef 104/2, Kef 105, and ESS AMT 1aM. Those need more power.
Last night, I was browsing Facebook Marketplace, and saw an M40. He was only $20 more than I had paid for and sold my M40 for. I offered him $20 less, and he accepted, so today, I picked up my new M40! I'm using it with the preamp stage of my Sansui AU-9900, and it is sounding very good! I've got it in class A mode. Listening to Pink Floyd the Wall, then Lover Boy, and now LZ I. Dazed and Confused just ended.
I am so happy to find this unit. The serial number is 12 numbers lower than my original model, and it is in much better condition. This is my second time that I bought something I sold and regretted selling. The first was a pair of Sony GS3 speakers. And both times I ended up with nicer versions that my original versions for less money or the same. I've had many amps pulling test duty, and none of them compared to the Yamaha M40, especially in class A mode.
Have any of you ever sold something only to buy another when you found it again because you regretted letting the original go? Is there a story to go with it?

I paid $40 for mine. No big story behind it though. A thrift store find. There was a big sale going on at Value Village, and on my second visit that day, I saw it sitting at the test station. It was plugged in and turned on, and feeling quite warm. Not sure why it was left, but hey, I'll take it! It might have had the Pre/amp section disconnected. I don't remember. I have found a few decent things at the test station.
