Hi everyone, yesterday I went to the local thrift store and picked up a late 1980s Yamaha Natural Sound tape deck for $8 and when I got it home and hooked it up and played some of my tapes on it they sounded way better than any other tape deck I had owned up to this point.
The only problem it seemed to have was that the belt for the tape counter was a bit worn out because the tape counter was a bit sluggish when you would rewind or play a tape but it was fine when you would fast forward the tape.
Now here where the problem comes in, when I first got it it it was playing perfectly (it even powered through some tapes that my previous tape deck couldn't play through.)
So as for the aforementioned tape counter problem, I had a spare belt laying around that worked for it perfectly and so I went to take the deck apart so I could get the old belt out (which was starting to turn to goo) and install the new one.
I had put the new belt on and got the deck back together and was going to test the tape deck out when all of the sudden the tape deck wouldn't play anymore, it would act like it was going to engage but the take-up spindles (or whatever you call those things that spin the tape around inside the tape player) weren't spinning and neither were the capstan pinchers.
I also noticed that it wouldn't let me eject the tape either without turning the machine off and then turning it back on again and then turning it back off and then hitting the eject button and then forcing the tape door open.
I cannot figure out for the life of me why all of the sudden the tape player won't work when it was working perfectly before. And I never touched any of the adjustments or anything else about this thing mechanically, all I did was remove a couple of cables from their sockets on the motherboard so I could then remove the tape player mechanism so I could get to the tape counter belt to remove the old one and install the one. and then I put everything back where it was originally including the cables I had disconnected.
Any ideas as to what had happened and how I could fix it up back to proper working order again?
