Yamaha NS-1000 blown tweeter.

It finally happened! I have two sets of NS-1000M and one of the speakers has blown a tweeter.

I have sent it off to Magic Marksy on Ebay for repair. Anyone have any experience with this guy's repaired tweeters? He claims to have replacement voice coils that have been ordered to the exact specifications of the original.

I opened it up myself first just to look and the break in the coil is not at the ends where it connects to the solder pads, so it's beyond my desire to try and repair...I also have no desire to get too intimate with the beryllium dome.

:dunno: Hope he can help you out.. Keep us posted. I have a couple spare tweeters that need to be repaired.
 
same specs as in same coil size and impedance???, maybe BUT not flat wire as the original. I asked him this exact question: are your replacements same type of flat wire? the answer was NO. This was a few years back. Has anything changed?

I asked him the same question several years ago and got the same answer.

It's hard to know how much impact using round magnet wire instead of square would have on the overall performance of the driver. I guess you'll get to find out but unless the differences are so subtle, I'm thinking at the very least I would want both drivers to have the same type of VC.

That occurred to me too. I sent my existing blown tweeter to him for repair at a cost of ~$129, but I also purchased an additional one from him at a cost of $249, so I will have a spare. But then, his ad also says that he only replaces the voice coil if necessary, so it is possible the same square coil comes back to me.

I will see if I can hear a difference, but given that is it a tweeter and not a midrange driver, I don't really expect to be able to hear the difference...
 
I had a blown tweeter on a NS 690 which a tech was able to repair for me. He also used round wire as other square wire no longer available apparently. The repaired tweeter sounded flatter (less sparkle) and softer and I picked up the difference between the left and right speakers clearly. I thankfully managed to get a spare in a deal with someone and replaced it for the repaired tweeter - sound back to normal and happy again. kept the repaired tweeter as a spare I will have to live with should there be any mishap in the future.
I am sure the sound difference between rewound tweeter and original will be even more obvious in the NS 1000. Not wanting to sound negative but just reporting an honest experience I had and possibility I forsee.
 
I got the "new" Tweeter I bought from Dr. Marks today. I will wait for my repaired tweeter to arrive before installing in the speaker since mine is in somewhat better cosmetic condition.

But, out of curiosity, I sent him an email asking if the tweeter I bought from him had the original square wire voice coil in it, or if it had been replaced with a round coil.

His response:

"Most, if not all, of the tweeters I sell …. have NEW “edge wound” “rectangular wire “ voice coils."

So it looks like the Doctor has found a source for those square voice coils.

Yep, that's him.

BTW, I actually disassembled one of his repaired tweeters to get a peek.

Looked fine to me.
