Yamaha NS-1000M: The Definitive Setup Thread

So I got the 16" stands. It was horrible. Haha! Tweeter and midrange became incredibly harsh. Put them back on my books at 3" and suddenly everything was smooth again.

Interesting. I've got some wood and now I'm looking to DIY some stands. Not sure if I'll do them at 6" or move up to 8 with a 5 degree tilt back or so...but I don't think I'm going higher than that.
 
I have had my NS-1000s hooked up to many different setups. My favorite was a Luxman Solid State integrated amp or Dared tube preamp and Rogue Audio M120 tube power amps. Mine are on stands about 10" off the ground with a similar tilt to what was mentioned and close to the back wall..
 
Hello. Got a pair of these Yamahas sitting on top of my oak roll top desk which is flush up against a wall. Since i don't play loud an old Dynaco ST35 paired with an Eico HF85 pre does just fine. Cd input only but together sound so wonderfully balanced with the warmth of tubes and the fine detail and speed the drivers provide, I need very little else. Try tubes, the texture will bring you real close to the music like nothing else. Ron
 
I have a few pairs of NS-1000s and NS-1000Ms. My main pair is on 12" metal stands that hold the mono tube amps below them. They are about 8 inches from the back wall with the drivers about 12" from the side walls. The room width is 12 Feet.

My favorite SS amps with Yamaha NS-1000s

Kenwood L-09Ms ( totally agreed with Sam ). Incredible dynamics and the midrange is wonderful for a SS amp. These beat out my Aleph 5

Yamaha B-2 - Very tube like, a bit dark sounding - sounds a lot like my Triode connected Citation II

My favorite tube amps with these speakers

McIntosh MC30s - At low to medium volume listening - It's got the most breathtaking and realistic midrange that I've heard - This combo in my room have convinced a few folks to search out MC30s or NS1000s.

Harman Kardon Citation II - This amp does not sound like most tube amps I've heard - it's not romantic or lush sounding - It sounds very transparent - with every detail coming through and very well controlled bass - but the sound staging - deep and wide - is the best I've heard from any tube amps. Just amazing.

Well I'm now driving mine with a Parasound Halo A 23 and a NAD C 162 preamp. (I'm hoping to turn the NAD into a Wyred 4 Sound DAC-2 as soon as used W4S models start becoming available.) As I'm in a condo and will only be playing moderate volumes at best, the A 23 won't run out of headroom - and I figure, once I replace it with a JC 1 array down the road, I can always use the A 23 to power some side surrounds or something. :D


Steely Dan's Deacon Blues coming through beautifully right now - still doesn't have the type of soundstage that I'm used to on the 22 Reference Connoisseurs, but we'll see what happens when I get them on stands and start moving furniture around. I've also made some 8" high stands out of pine, with a 4.5 degree tilt back based on the H-type Yamaha stands made for these speakers. Yesterday I finished polyurethaning over the stain, so I should get them together either tonight or tomorrow.

It's been a fun little project. :thmbsp:

Greg, I`m a bit envious of you getting those 1000s for only $150, but congrats all the same. I can relate to your situation since I am in Alaska and the larger, heavier gear can be problematic to say the least. I saw you run a NAD pre and I was going to recommend one along with a Denon POA series amp. I use an 1155 matched with a POA-2800 @200wpc and it`s a great combo and we seem to have similar music tastes.

The 2800 is built like a tank as is its predecessor the 2400. It runs cool and seems to like a variety of speakers such as ADS, Bostons, Polks, and Yammies too. I have the NS-670, a smaller yet similar design to the 1000 which I hope to find someday.
 
Yes I've been happy with the NAD pre, although I'm in an old building and I'm getting more ground noise than I had with my previous receiver - so would love to have balanced outputs. Like I said the Wyred 4 Sound Dac/pre will probably replace it.

I was not familiar with that Denon amp but just took a look at it, and it would probably have been great to run. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like many go on sale here in Canada, and it's a bit of a beast (50+ pounds), so international shipping would be fairly outrageous.

That was one good point about the Parasound A 23 - at 35 pounds incl. packaging it had fairly reasonable shipping costs as opposed to larger models.

Plus, it looks great. :D

Hi. I want to buy NS-1000(M), my amplifier is Yamaha A-960 Mark II. Is this amp enough for those speakers? A-960II is quite powerful and it sounds amazing, I choose this amp by myself.


Btw. on the back of the amp I've seen logo that says "NS SERIES". Was this amp made to power NS Series?!

Im not sure about the NS 1000 s ( I so want a pair) but Im using my Nakamichi PA 7 amp, nakamichi CA 5 pre amp combo to drive my NS 500m's. and am very very happy with the sound. I not sure how diffrent the NS 1000 sound reproduction is from the NS 500m so I will defer to those that have both in their systems. Enjoy!!!!!
 
Sorry to revive an old thread here, but I just got a pair of 1000m and I was told I should position them with the tweeters on the inside of the pair. What's everyone's opinion on this?
 
I had mine set up for a couple months with tweeters in and on 18" stands with no tilt. I thought they sounded great. Just yesterday, I put then on new stands (10-11" with 5 degree backward tilt) with tweeters out. I haven't had enough listening time to make any comments, but if there's a big difference, I'll post my impressions.
 
I have run my NS-1000Ms with an a CA-2010, an A-700, an M2 and a Bryston 3BSST.

All amps made them sound great, but they're listed from worst to best, although the spread from worst to best is very narrow.

I use a custom made passive preamp (attenuator) and my source DAC has a tube pre-amp stage built-in.

Love the sound.

They're on custom made Skylan stands, filled with sand.
 
I'm running mine (NS-1000's) with a CJ PV5 pre and switch (via amp/speaker switch) between a B&K EX442 amp and MFA M120 tube monoblocks.

Just bought A&M 10" sand filled stands - perfect fit. Also added tempered glass tops to protect the veneer from falling CD's (my rack is just above the 1000's).

Running them without grills for now because they look nice without them, but may add them back on at some point.
