I'm not really posting here too much, but I've been reading audiokarma for years now.
Last year, just before covid, I've moved to Australia and I'm starting to buy some components to build a new sound system.
While going through ads in the internet the Yamaha NS-690 cought my eyes. I've read a lot good opinions on them in the recent years, and I'd love to try them out.
The thing is they are about 350km from me, so I can't really go and have a look before I decide.
The owner says that "they don't sound right". He's not really competent and he wasn't even able to tell me if all 6 speakers are working/making sound. He also said that "the voice coil or spider is very stiff", and he doesn't think that they've ever been opened in an attempt to fix.
I've never done a speaker rebuild before. I'm good with wood and aesthetic works in general, got some tools, and I'm generally confident with my manual skills. And so I thought it might be a good and potentially satisfying idea to buy these beuties and restore they're original magnificence.
I've asked the owner to send me a few pictures of them and here's what I've got.
Both midrange speakres seem deformed, and one of the woofers seems to have a crack. Also since it's a mk I there's a cloth/fabric instead of the rubber used in next 2 generations. Is it possible to change it or fix the one that is visibly deformed on the picture?
Well, please tell me what are you thoughts on these speakers. Do you think it's worth to try and bring them back to life? Is it possible to do for someone with no experience on that matter? What sort of traps may I encounter on the way? What is the availibility of the parts that I might come to need in order to fix them?
They're very reasonably priced. Not like in american charity shops ($10
) but still cheap by the rest of the world standards.
Any idea, thought or suggestion would be much appreciated.
