My brother and I were stationed in Germany about 20km apart. He was at Spangdalem AB ( F-4 phantoms) and me at Bitburg AB (F-15 Eagles). He picked up the 1000M's in 1979. Boy did we have a great time together.

That explains how you received a pair of NS1000M as a gift. You have a very nice brother.
True.. But...They were in pretty sad shape. Both tweeters were open and the cabinets needed to be refinished. I picked up two new tweeters from Yamaha at $110 a piece. The NS-690's were my fathers.

I've been looking at these 3 post Sound Anchor stands for a while, not sure what they're filled with. 15" stands (16¼" with spikes) are 45 lbs each.

Cabinets on my original pair that were stolen need refinished, they were slid across a sandbag wall, did you do this yourself?
Plus, one mid doesn't work well, pretty sure the magnet has been jarred loose due to rough handling.
I have a spare set of woofers sitting here in original boxes, purchased from Yamaha long ago, need to source a mid-range for this older set.
Haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the NS-690s.
My NS690MkI speakers are keepers running them in the Vintage rig. Since the are Tri-ampable with connectors built in, I have always wanted to actively Tri-amp them using the main rig which uses Tri-amped Magnapan MGIIIa. I have never been able to ascertain if the Tri-amp inputs bypass the crossover or not, and have never reopened them since epoxying the magnets to the woofer cages as insurance against the magnet separating. I unfortunately did not check at that time.

Looking at the manual for NS690MkI it appears to me the crossover is bypassed when tri-amped, they show a frequency divider before the amps and state each speaker becomes an independent unit.

After much consideration I have reset my NS1000s to a height of 16", with no rake.
Doing this has brought me to realize that the "airy" sound experienced using extreme rake is artificially created by the rake.
While rake is very inviting to listen to, it's airy sound is not something that exists on the original recordings.
Rake has the effect of reducing the brightness of the high and mid ranges, this could be considered a good thing - NS1000s are known for being bright.
Rake also reduces the bass volume and tightness, this is not something the NS1000s need, if anything they lack somewhat in this area.
After 4 days - 20+ hours of listening to 6 albums typically used when setting up my system, I've made changes to both the high and mid level attenuators.
Current settings are High level at -2dB, Mid level at -2.5dB, reducing the brightness and I feel achieving a better balance across the 3 ranges.
Bass is now more equally balanced with the high and mid ranges.
This is a work in progress, I feel the effects so far are much more desirable than the fake airiness produced by rake.
It's my desire to hear the recordings as they were intended to sound, not to enhance them.

I hesitated when I bought mine but after hearing my C7s I'm glad I pulled the trigger. Today I'm going to listen to some different speakers and hear some different sounds than what I"m used to even though they not be a perfect fit.
