WalleyeNy, just to clear things up, I do not work at the store in question. I saw the ad shortly after it was listed, and notified three area AKers and one other friend who all would be likely to be interested.
VinylDavid was extremely interested, and made an offer to buy it. As you noted in the PM, the store was quite eager to sell it to you for even more, even though they had a commitment at some level to sell it locally.
Publishing ads frequently leads to situations that spin out of control, with bidding wars, reneged agreements, and lots of grief when a local buyer loses an eagerly anticipated deal.
I was hoping David could round up the cash to complete this deal before some out of stater with deeper pockets could trump his offer, and your thread gave notice to thousands - hence my post.
We do a dance at AK between notifying everyone there is something interesting for sale versus the possibility that the publicity will blow a sale for someone local (or a distant buyer with eagle eyes)who is equally deserving. Fortunately in this case, David got it nailed to the wall before the damage was done, though not from lack of trying by the store.:yes::scratch2:
The approach I like to use best is to PM a local to the sale friend or two and give them a heads up. It both helps a friend once in a while and doesn't significantly lessen the chance of blowing someone else's deal. That is a win-win.:thmbsp:

So now we all have to worry that we might be "chewed out" by another fellow AK'r for posting an interesting listing!! My goodness!!
I guess we should only be giving heads ups for the funny listings, the ridiculous listings, and maybe only ones in our own personal area.
Maybe next we should post a warning that an item is "spoken for" or PM'd, and therefore prevent such horrific happenings such as someone else beating a friend to the sale.

I knew about this amp before the music store higher ups did. My friend (NOT sheltie dave, he is another good friend) works there but is not the owner. I did not at the time have the cash to make a reasonable offer on it. Dave also called me to inform me of the amp.
Now I have funds, and I made my offer. The results are obvious. They're still out shopping for bids, which gives me some cause for concern, but I hope that they do the right thing and let me buy the amp.

Should he have contacted every AK member to see if they were trying to purchase that item before posting it here?
I don't think so.
When I see something I consider to be rare or unique I post it up in case someone here may be interested in it.
In fact, I'm going to continue to do that (thankfully my "finds" are rather infrequent at best) as it is my belief that is EXACTLY one of the reasons Dollars and Sense exists.
Now if I'm wrong, please point it out to me. I'm going to go put on my big boy pants now.
OP didn't do anything wrong per se. However, I did PM him when this thread had 22 views and just his posts, and politely asked him to remove it, since I had my hat in the ring (and he didn't say that he was buying it). He declined.

Tuquala, like everything in life, there always are consequences, intended or not. I spoke out because I KNEW someone local is trying to buy it, and from knowing David fairly well, he is not always able to immediately able to walk in a store and drop a grand on the table today.
I have done blast sale notices in the past, but normally it is for a situation like a garage sale, where only locals and locals only with interest and time would hit the sale. A non-time dependent sale like this, with the store shopping for bids over the offer price, is rife for heartache.
Throw in that this amp will get ruined if shipped, due to seller's penchant for not packing 140 pound amps well(they are not McIntosh,) David is involved, and a lot of people on AK would be for pulling the thread. I wouldn't call that "chewing someone out." I would call it "giving a worthy AK junior member a break."
For every AK member who would chase after something for sale, there are ten lurkers who do this for a living and love their free search site. Back before I got back into the stereo hobby, I could care two figs about this. Starting out, I couldn't figure out why I was beaten to every good deal. Once I received a few tips, deals became easier to find.
Now, outside of a few specific areas, I'm glad to give heads up to friends, and post about some sales that AKers might miss, gaining more friends. Most everyone here is somewhere along that continuum. As time progressed, I became more attuned that considerate notification allowed opportunity for those who are independently poor to operate on a level with the more well to do buyers and flippers.
I do hope David ends up with this unit, as it will be used and nurtured well, and will help him in his sound engineering endeavors.

I know I DID blow the sale for you.
And since it is me you quoted, I decided that he was worthy. When you are here to look through my phone tree, maybe you can help, but until that time, I call a few Gateway Audio Society members, and we collectively discuss who might be a good owner.
Maybe we shouldn't help out a college student, and maybe it is a good thing to carpet bomb AK with all the good gear around the country, so we can have more threads about people just missing out on gear, people getting trumped on deals they were closing on, and dumping on people who sold gear for too cheap..
