I don't recall exactly, might be the "universal" model meaning selectable input voltage to work in several different regions/markets.

Does it have a voltage selector on the back panel?

I would think the U stand for Universal model as what whoaru99 said because I've seen some yamaha receivers and amps have a u after them like CR-600u and that was a universal model with the voltage selector.

Does the pre-amp have a selectable voltage switch on the back?

You might think that but your wrong in the case of the Yamaha line the OP is referring to. The CX preamps and MX amps with a "U" were US and Canadian models. I serviced Yamaha under warranty in the 80's and 90's.

Those codes are to differentiate the various changes to schematics, parts, boards etc for the various countries such as power supplies for example. The OP is referring to the actual model number of the unit. Have you seen a model CX-800C, 800R, 800E, 800G, 800A? NO, its either an 800 or an 800U. I repeat, the 800U is the US and Canadian version and the 800 will be all others.

Sure haven't you..:D

Mello out..It really is'nt worth getting upset about. The only real difference is input power management...

Interestingly, when I look through all of my old Yamaha brochures, the "U" suffix was always only attached to Amps and PreAmps, and was only used with the TOTL model for a particular model year. For example, the one I am looking at now has the following TOTL "U" models in it: CX-1000U, MX-1000U. Perhaps it means "Ultimate" :D

Mellow out? :scratch2:

I'm merely trying to make sure the correct info is provided. The OP asked a simple question and I answered and then corrected others chiming in with information that isn't correct or related. YES, there is a CDX-550E MODEL and its a CDP, however I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. When you find a unit or owner's manual that says CX-800E or any other letter besides U on it please let me know.

Sorry..Your right about the model # suffix..Just kinda sounded like you were getting upset.Don't want anyone stroking out.Thats all I've heard about lately is your Healthcare system.::thmbsp:
