Yamaha Pro PC2602 amp in home setting?

I talked to a tech today in Tampa about my PC2602M, by the way. He has experience with this series of amps and he told me it sounds like an internal grounding issue. Hopefully it won't be too expensive. I am taking it in next week. They are slow, so my rig shouldn't be down too long.

It is EPR Electronics in Tampa, next to Speaker Exchange. They are factory authorized for Yamaha Pro. I will let everyone know how it turns out and report my experience.

I'd be interested to hear how you make out with that. By the way, anything wrong with chopping an RCA cable and soldering some 1/4" phone plugs on the end? My balanced preamp isn't ready yet and I don't have any XLR interconnects.

I popped the top on it tonight. I'm shocked at how clean it is inside. The only dust is where it settled through the vents onto the output boards. The center of the unit and the fan look like they were just made. Must not have been used much, or at least never enough to trigger the fan.
 
Nothing at all wrong with modifying RCA cables with 1/4" ends. You can also purchase 1/4" to RCA adapters, but adding ends directly will eliminate the added resistance and potential problems of an adapter.

By the way, the fan should have a foam filter between it and the intake grill, it pulls in from the rear and exits through the front faceplate and holes in the top. Check and make sure.
 
Tested it out today with my little ADS L470/IIs. Kind of a mismatch when both speakers togther weigh less than the amp. The barely noticable noise floor of the Yamaha is quite impressive. When I get around to dragging it upstairs to the real speakers I'll see about a proper comparison.

The filter is in place, and shows no signs of use, although it's deteriorated somewhat. I'll have to get some humidifier filter foam or something and make a new one.
 
Well, I found an ad online for one of these things saying it was a "Bryston beater," so I got out my 3B (110WPC) to compare on the L470s. My memory for sound quality isn't particularly good for testing gear like this, but I have to say the Bryston was my preference. Overall the Yamaha isn't as sweet sounding.

Both are approximately the same age (1987-89) and neither appear to have seen much use or are needing any service. Perhaps I'm being unfair in comparing a mass-produced pro amp to what was almost a boutique component at the time, or maybe it's just the Yamaha sound. Tomorrow I'm going to try my Phase Linear 400 since I've had the same thoughts about it as I do about the Yamaha.
