Yamaha R-300 receiver

My advice after you have ensured the amp module is properly soldered to the PC board is to check locally for speakers that are for sale and ask if you can try the speakers on the Yamaha to see how they sound.

I picked mine up for $15 in dusty but really great condition due to low output.
I cleaned the problematic selector switch and it's worked great ever since. The only other things I did was to replace the heat sink grease on the STK and add a stick on heat sink to the voltage amplifier as it got pretty darn hot and there isn't any heat sinking from the factory.
After repairing it I gifted it to a friend as I didn't need any more gear and shes been using it every day.

As far as spending $40 on the knobs, it really is up to you. If you like it and are going to hang on to it for a while I'd say it's probably worth it but if you are going to buy something new pretty soon I'd just try to find something suitable to stick on for now.

Bought mine new in early 1982. Paired it with a Yamaha P-350 TT and a pair of Boston Acoustics A70 speakers. My first "system." Used it everyday until ~2013 when I finally upgraded to a Marantz NR1504 for HDMI connectivity with Blu-Ray play. Still use the Yamaha (now hooked up to a pair of NHT Super One speakers and a Thorens TD125 MKII TT), but the selector switch is extremely sensitive. Real trouble getting Phono to play. OMGcat! - how did you clean the Selector switch? I've never opened it up, but am willing to try. I really want this working again. Thanks for any help provided!

I used a spray called Peavey Silent Slider. It's like Deoxit but cheaper. I just spritzed a little in to the upper part of the switch and turned it a bunch of times. I'm sure it would have benefited from a complete tear down and cleaning of the switch but after one application of the spray it went from basically no sound to working fine with no drop outs afterward.

Thanks - I'll try to find that and give it a try. If I can't, would CRC QD 11 work?
 
I had one of these that evolved into a doorstop after the unobtanium voltage and current amp STK modules had issues. It turned into a parts unit for another AK member. When it ran, it seemed to like highly efficient "neutral" speakers that were not too bass-heavy.
 
It should be propping your door open in a windstorm quite nicely.. As I recall, of the two STK packs, the voltage amp was replaced, and the current amp was irreplaceable. I thought you might at least find a home for the knobs.
 
I recently got one of these and a Sony PS-LX5, both in like new condition. They were purchased for an older lady and she rarely used it. In all my years I’ve never seen such vintage pieces look so new. And YES, it is a great sounding receiver, way better than I was expecting.
