Hi everyone. I'm picking up a Yamaha RX-V870 for $12 CAD. Does anyone have any input on this device?

I'm primarily going to be using it for music. Records in particular. Hooking up a Pioneer PL-255 turntable directly to it through the phono input. As well as 2 Technics 1200 turntables going into a 4 channel Numark mixer (which I will hopefully be upgrading) that will be going into one of the other inputs in the receiver. The speakers I have right now are Reference Audio R50S - 100 watt bookshelves (which too will eventually be upgraded). As the speakers don't have much for low frequencies, I'll also be hooking up a Yamaha YST-SW45 subwoofer.

Thoughts on my Yamaha receiver purchase?

That's a lot of receiver for very little money. I'm running a BPC Yamaha receiver, the RX-777 and am very happy with it. It is on 24/7 doing computer amp duty.
 
I'm not sure about the 870, but my first AVR was a RX-V880. A very beefy receiver, that sounds great. So, if your 870 sounds anything like my 880, your $12 bucks was well spent.
 
I think you did great! I owned a RX-1105 for almost 20 years, and it did a fine job of driving my ADS L710's. It's still in use, driving 2 pair of bookshelf's in my sisters TV system.
 
Thanks everyone. I picked it up and the thing is built like a tank. Haven't hooked it up yet. I want to open it up and clean it out. Any advice on doing this? I have air cans and Deoxit.
 
Doubt you'll need to deoxit it. During the time mine was in use, I did several remodel projects (with sheetrock dust everywhere) and never had any problems. The switches/pots seem to be well sealed. I would take the cover off and blow it out good. Save the deoxit for when/if any issues develop.

Thanks for the advice. I noticed last night that the FM antenna plug will have to be replaced. Unless I can make it work with what's there.

As for the fm antenna plug, that's one of those european-style stupid connectors that nothing it seems will fit it. some people will solder a length of wire to the center pin due to this. Replace with a bulkhead "F" connector, problem permanently solved. If you must clean inside the thing, use compressed air sparingly, you can force dust/cat hair/ debris into otherwise clean areas. I use vacuum with an assortment of soft brushes to eliminate years of crud accumulation, works fine.
 
Definitely the vacuum method works great. I have cleaned out many an old unit using one with a soft brush and it works great.
 
I have three on the go.. An RX-V1500 and RX-V1900 which I bought used 7 to 8 years after I bought my RX-V1800 new. Awesome solid products with great build quality. $12 is soooo over the top good buy!! Congrats :)
 
All of the Yamaha AX, RX, and RX-V series seem to be respectable BPC. I have a couple and am happy with them, other than the common issue of a flaky input selector switch. At the price you paid, it's definitely a good score.

I opened it up and and it didn't seem too dusty inside. Blew some air and closed it up. All seems good.

The only problem I noticed, other than the damaged FM antenna plug, is that the right speaker output seems to be a bit weaker than the left. I confirmed that it's neither the source or the speakers. Easy fix....I just slightly adjusted the L + R balance.

Thanks! Now I just want to upgrade my speakers.
 
Yamaha has a great rep for most of their products. As already expressed, a good buy for what you paid.

And...they are both Japanese. They'll get along.

So, after a week of using the receiver, there's now nothing showing on the display. Is this an easy fix for someone that has no clue what he's looking at when looking inside the receiver?

Is the blue light on in the front panel? If so that means Pure Direct mode is engaged and it turns off the front display. If the blue lamp is lit, just press the Pure DIrect Button. This will turn off the light and re-engage the display. Also, I would down load a manual and read it just so you are aware of all the configuration options etc.. that this thing is capable of. :)

The Yamaha RX-V870 doesn't have the Pure Direct feature. I believe that's available on newer models than what I have.

I do have the manual that someone was kind enough to provide it to me on this site. I read through it and there's no mentioning about the display. No dimmer feature either. There's nothing even in the troubleshooting section at the end of the manual.

My guess is that the bulb burnt out. The receiver still works....just can't see the display.
