Yamaha rx-v3855.1 surround sound doesn't work if streaming device is connected directly to the AV. Please help.

Setup: Yamaha rx-v385 AV connected to Phillips 4K tv via HDMI ARC. Surround sound only seems to work if i connect the Apple 4K to the TV itself. If I connect it to the AV's HDMI port, center channel goes mute and the rest of the speakers all output the same sound, including dialogue. Ive adjusted the settings to the best of my abilities with no luck. Any idea why this is happening?

To fix missing surround sound on a Philips 4K TV via HDMI ARC,
ensure the cable is in the specific ARC-labeled port, update TV software, and change the Digital Output setting to "Pass-through" or "Bitstream". Enable EasyLink (HDMI-CEC) and set audio format to "Multichannel" in the sound settings.
Top Troubleshooting Steps for Philips TV Surround Sound
  • Enable HDMI ARC/CEC: Go to Settings > General Settings > EasyLink and turn on EasyLink, EasyLink Remote Control, and Auto ARC.
  • Change Audio Format: In audio settings, change Digital Output from PCM to Pass-through or Bitstream to allow the surround signal to pass to your soundbar.
  • Check HDMI Port: Ensure the HDMI cable is plugged into the port labeled HDMI ARC or eARC on the back of the TV.
  • Update Software: Go to Settings > Update Software to ensure the TV has the latest firmware.
  • Power Cycle: Unplug both the TV and the sound system from the wall, wait 1-2 minutes, and plug them back in to reset the HDMI handshake.
  • Test Cables: Use a high-speed HDMI cable (1.4 or higher).
