Yamaha S4115h blown woofer

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a pair of these for dirt cheap. One is working and the other has a broken woofer (torn paper, voice coil probably open).

I see 2 options to fix the bad one:
- buy a recone kit from the Speaker Exchange
- or remove the good one, measure its T/S then find another driver close enough (I use them for garage PA so nothing Hi-Fi)

BUT... my biggest problem is: I opened the bad one, remove the 6 screws from the inner woofer baffle... and it will absolutely not move. I went pretty hard at it, nothing. This thing is built like a tank!

Without removing this baffle no access to the woofer screws...

Has anyone ever did the same operation successfully? Is breaking the glue (or baffle) the only option here?

I would think a PA speaker should be designed for serviceability... maybe it got already repaired by someone previously who got zealous and glued the hell out of it...

Welcome to AK!

You say it's voice coil is "probably open". Have you tested it with a multi-meter to make sure? If it just has a torn cone you can easily repair it.

As for removing it...

It looks like it's mounted on a thin piece of particle board. If you have to break it to get the woofer out it would be no huge loss. Just find a decent looking piece of scrap wood and cut it to size.

Thank you, Crazy!

Funny I didn't even take the multimeter out when I had the speaker open, but when I played it nothing at all moved on the woofer. That's why I'm suspecting an open VC. But agreed there could be an issue with the crossover inductor too.

I have to say I got so frustrated with the baffle that at some point I closed it back and called it a day ;)

Thanks for the suggestion on the particle board. It seemed savage to me at first to consider doing that but I think you're right, it makes sense. As long as I don't damage the boards that shape the front "horn" (not really a horn). I think the baffle is 3/4" thick, shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'll report back when I find some time to tackle that.
In the meantime if anybody else has an idea that doesn't involve a jack hammer or gasoline, feel free to chime in :)
