Hello,

How you will see this old Yamaha turntable model (originally sold only in Japan)?

It looks very similar as 800series: YP-800 vs YP 1000 and YP 801BL vs this updated version YP 1000II.

But the tonearm is different (here it is Stax UA-7), the platter is different (1000 has a heavier platter), the motor is different (YP 1000 shares some similarities with Technics SP-10MK1) and who knows what else. YP 1000 weights a bit more and there has been a clear gap between the selling price: YP 1000II (150 000 yens 1976) and YP 800 (98 000 yens 1974).

To put those someway on the map: Yamaha YP-D10 selling price was 128 000yens (1978), Yamaha GT-1000 99 800yens (1983). Denon DP 59L (89 800 yens 1984), Victor QL Y77F (105 000yens 1981), Pioneer PL 70 (150 000yens 1981).

If anything; this model has not been a cheap one (it has been the top Yamaha model on its own time). I also wonder had Micro Seiki something to do with it?

No opinions here? Ok, I'll pull the trigger and buy one. The price is good and it comes with:
- Two graphite tonearm tubes: Stax 7cfp (s-wand) and Stax 9cfp (direct). The aluminum s-wand is there too.
- Original Stax headshell (for s-wands)
- A small additional extra counterweight (for that tonearm, if needed).

Plint etc. looks to be nice. There are some marks on the dust cover, but based on the pictures ... hopefully/nothing too hard/deep (most can be removed with a plastic polishing chemical).

Do I need this?
Probably not.

I already have a Luxman PD 441 with a Moerch UP-4 tonearm, a Denon DP 59L (both tonearm tubes and all 4 counterweights), Luxman PD 277 and Harman Kardon T60. But then again, I guess these old turntables are my weak point. Will be quite interesting to compare it with those four turntables. I already have two different sets in two rooms. Perhaps I should create a third one in the third room :)

As you say it, it was only for the Japanese market so in Europe or America there will not be many users with an opinion. I think it should be a decent TT but not compareble with te TT from the golden age of Yamaha.

Yes. As for what comes to the motor alone (not yet Quarz locked) ... it will probably lag somewhat behind. Other than that? The GT series is certainly ahead of it, but I'm not so sure about the YP-D series. Then I'll compare it to the Luxman PD 441 and/or the Denon DP 59L and I might get some idea of how it could stack up against more common YP-D10 or YP-D 71 models.

Luxman PD 441 & Denon DP 59L are great tables. Knowing the Yamaha quality of the era it would be a nice TT but when it comes to the brand the GT-2000 is the way to go. You just need NOT to buy two or three less expensive tables to afford that. I was able to resist temptations and went for it, it's really special unboxing this impressive table.

I know. In prehistory; Europeans were divided into so-called to hunters and gatherers. My ancestors must have belonged to the latter :).
 
I have a YP-801BL and It is an impressive hulk of Japanese precision, engineering, and materials. If I felt like upgrading, I would seriously consider the YP-1000.

If the plint of the YP-1000 would be larger you could use 12'' tubes (both s- wand & straight wand) with that tonearm.
