Yamaha YP-B4 for my first turn table (Help Thread).

Hey guys! So I got the new cart and everything, and now I'm noticing after adjusting the weight to 2 grams(may be a coincidence) that when pressing the start button, the tone arm rises slightly, moves in about a half inch, and then goes back to the resting dock and stops. Is there a linkage I need to reset or something or is it bigger than that!
 
Have you tried just lifting the tonearm manually and setting it on the record.. does it play all the way to the end?? Does tonearm return home automatically??

Thanks for getting back with me! Yes, it does play all the way through and rehomes as it should. It just won't start playing from the start button.

Additionally, if it's in the middle and I hit the cut button, it returns as well.
 
OK you should have an adjustment for the set down location.. but I can't swear to it 100% both of my other Yamaha did. Have you down loaded the service manual from vinyl engine. It's free but you'll have to register there to access manuals
 
Where it sets down on the record I'm assuming? Also I don't think they have this table available on there. I looked but they only had one document that wasn't the manual. :(
 
I think I found it in the YP-77 manual. I had no idea there was even a screw down in there! Thanks a bunch. I'll try this!

Well piss.. I've been looking. But looks like you found the adjustment. But still no worky.... there should be someone that has experience with this table.. but this place has changed, used to be a bit more friendlier, and more people chiming in on what your working on. I wish I had more to offer. Similar problem with the dual I'm working on. It tries to land at the right spot, but after stopping for a millisecond it goes on by towards the end of the record then either sets down in the middle of the record or return home.. lol plays wonderfully, sounds good and does return home after after play.. good luck
 
Well this is my first post and I have been blown away with the support. Maybe its just because I didn't even expect anyone to respond. Regardlessly I found that if I change my counter weight to 1.75g instead of 2g it is just enough to pick it up and place it on the record. I could have swore I read somewhere that it was supposed to be 2g. I guess we will see when I get the pre amp if it skips. Is it normal for the arm to not be strong enough to pick up the cartridge? From what I can tell the cartridge is 8g itself, maybe that's on the heavy side? I'm not sure
 
I believe this is the correct adjustment screw for the set-down location. I had tweaked it at some point and found that it was now setting down a couple seconds into the first song instead of the run-in groove (need to adjust it back).

It sounds like the Cut button works if it will return the tone arm from a song in the middle of the disc and it also functions correctly if it returns after the last track on the side.

Does your Repeat function work correctly? Mine is set to Off but still operates — it was inactive until I used either the Cut or Cue button, so I must have something out of order.

I think there is a proper starting position for all of the clockwork features and buttons and it is easy to get it wrong when you’re rotating the spindle for replacing a belt or doing other service work, but I haven’t been able figure it out. I’ll be attempting to fix the motor suspension on my table soon, I’ll take another poke at the issue then.

That's kinda what I was thinking happened. Keep me posted. I think my motor mounts are fine. Everything is quite and the app I have on my phone shows the rpms dead on! As mentioned above, when I dialed back the counter weight to 1.75g instead of 2g it was just enough to allow the arm to pick up and move over to the record. Set it back to 2g and it didn't work. I guess I just have a chonky cartridge. It is all metal (weighs 8g) fwiw.

That sounds more like the cueing lifter needs to be adjusted. (No idea how to do this though!)

It will like lift up to an acceptable height and then won't hardly budge toward the record. But when I dial down the weight slightly it's light enough to push over there. It's odd. If I am able to post a video I will when I get home
 
This is what the lifter post looks like in mine, there’s the retaining clip and the spring below the clip.
At the other end of the brass arm is the cam wheel attached to the cueing lifter.
I’m not sure what interactions with the end-of-side auto return and the Start cue button to induce lifting.

I'm not totally sure what in the lifting vertical movement would impede the arm from going horizontal. Like I said, big novice here. Also I should find a glass table and lay under it while it's playing!
