Yard Sale Electrovoice model 18's

I Picked up a pair of Electrovoice model 18 ETR speakers at a local yard sale today for a song. The woofers will need refoaming, but otherwise they look pretty good. I cant seem to find any info on them, they have a 12" woofer, an odd looking flat orange cloth looking mid and tweeter, and what looks like a normal super tweeter? Anyone have any info on these, worth refurbishing? I will try to get some pics up soon...Dave

meh. Probably worth refoaming and evaluating. That's just a dustcover on the MR. The drivers in those are pretty nondescript.

Warehouse Sound pushed the EV ETR ("Environmental Transducer Research") line pretty hard in the mid-1970's, as Sonny attests to in the attached catalog page scan :-)

Who's the guy plugging the set-up in the picture?
Would it happen to be Don Ho, who just passed away recently. ( Can I say "Ho" here?)

Edit: I get it now. It's obviously Sonny. But, Sonny Hu?
 
mhardy, It's good to see I'm not the only one who remembers the Warehouse Sound Company located in San Luis Obispo, CA back in the 70's. They marketed primarily to college students by having their sales brochures inserted in college campus newspapers and distributed via any method they could. They did feature EV speakers in almost every system they offered back then, and their effective write up's made you want to buy them sound unheard.

I used to haunt all of the various stereo chain stores in Southern California back in those days (Pacific Stereo, Cal Stereo, University Stereo, The Federated Group, Rogersound Labs, etc..) and none of those dealers stocked the E-V speakers, so I never got to hear them in person. It was almost like Warehouse Sound had an exclusive distribution deal! As big of historic name Electro-voice has, did they ever produce any really great sounding speakers? If so, I've never read about them anywhere! Western Electric, JBL, Altec, Jensen and Klipsch did make some fine sounding speakers back in the old days, but I'm not so sure about Electro-voice.....

PS - Warehouse Sound should have pushed Large Advent Loudspeakers as they would have had happier customers....(and might still be in business!)

There's no reason not to re-furb those. They look great from the pics. What's the going rate for a set at a yard sale these days?
 
Yes, EV made some magnificent speaker drivers and enclosures. The "ETR" series isn't among them, though :-( To see some of the fine EV's, take a look at:

I cannot be sure, but the woofer in the ETR-18 shown in this thread does not appear to be original.

EDIT: No, the guy in the photo isn't Don Ho... it's "Sonny", one of the Warehouse Sound crew, ca. 1976... and his ho... I mean, his ol' lady... I mean...

As for speakers - well, I have a pair of these at home. What can I say. . . they sound great! But if you want to get technical, I looked up the literature EV puts out on these speakers, and here's what their engineers had to say: "The 12-inch woofer employed in the Model 18 has a free-air resonance of 16 Hz. A sealed, urethane half-roll surround maintains precise alignment of the cone without unnecessarily raising the resonance, and this lends to the excellent bass response of this system. Since the human ear
is most sensitive to the middle portion of the frequency spectrum, we had spent considerable time in developing this aspect of the 18's design; the 5-inch midrange driver was perfected to efficiently reproduce a limited range of 2 octaves, with clarity and distinction. From approximately 3,000 Hz to 18,000, a special 2 1/2-inch cone tweeter provides' the sparkle and brilliance, and the new super tweeter covers 18,000 Hz to beyond the audible range, which gives the highest frequencies an edge and does much to enhance the realism of instrumental sounds. A specially designed LCR crossover controls the input to each of the drivers and provides adjustment (by the listener) of tweeter response to match room acoustics. As with all EV products, the system is thoroughly tested upon completion to assure laboratory performance.

I'm not sure about "laboratory performance", but I can tell you that my 18's have been through dozens of parties and several girlfriends and their friends, all of whom played my stereo continually. It's also a righteous package price on this stuff (30% off list) and everything considered, for the money, this system would be my first pick.

I gave a cool 5 bucks for them as the woofer foam is rotten...

Thanks Jordan, but all the drivers except the woofers seem to work well.

MHARDY6647...Good eye. The woofers in them were a very old pair of RAT SHACK Realistics.

I put in a pair of Woofers I had bought 25 years ago from SPEAKERWORLD here localy.

These things sound pretty darn good, I have them hooked to my BRYSTON 11B, 3B setup. Not bad for Yard Sale Junk...
