Yard sale score? Dual CS5000...any good?

Well, it doesn't have a power cord...and the tonearm seems gunked up (arm won't easily go up and down), but it looks like an upscale relative of the AR tables. Nice wood veneer, too, and with an Adcom cart of some sort. Anyway, what is the deal on this critter? Worth fixin'? Anybody used one of these decks?

I have one of those and think it is an acceptable TT. The one I have sees mostly duty as a platform to spin 78's. I purchased a mid level Shure and ordered 5 stylus specific to 78's toward that end.

With a little work on your part, you will have a fine unit that should serve you well.

Thanks squidbro! I was thinking about finding a Lenco for 78s, but maybe this could fill the bill. The table looks way too modern for 78 speed, but, sure enough, its there.

The arm is held up until the turntable comes up to speed, that's the "gunkiness." You WILL need to get a new belt, they're critical to proper speed stability. I still have and use daily the woodgrain CS5000 I bought new when they hit the market. Mainly it's used for 78s, but it does a fine job on LP's.

I love mine...beautiful look and sounds wonderful. As MelodyMaster said, get a new belt, and don't try pushing the tonearm down and around. It auto lowers to the LP when a sensor under the platter knows it is at correct speed (this is the most common complaint I've heard about these decks). Put the right cartridge on it, and you should be happy.
