Don't forget the accessories that come with owning a table, such as: brush, stylus cleaner of some sort, record cleaner. Owning a record player is a bit more involved than say a cdp, but way more fun!

Martin and Barb are always knowledgable, patient and real fans of the hobby itself. I find a lot of shops and staff are into the aspect of vinyl collecting, or some are really into the hi-fi aspect of it, but I find they really strike a good balance in between. Good equipment, good records, good fun.

I think ythat for 200 $ a JVC QL-A51 new is a good deal, surely better than a new U-Turn Orbit or something like that. In fact I hate new basic turntables simply because changing the speed is really difficult and none of them has the auto-return at the end of the record. Moreover the vendor says that will give you a free JVC cartridge with the QL-A51, it's a good start: in the future you can upgrade the cartridge with a better one...The turntable has a low mass arm, so you can use all the vintage Shures upgrading them with a Jico stylus, you will have a lot of option at a reasonable cost, IMHO.

Not a bad option. You can also upgrade the cart to others like Pickering, Stanton, Ortofon, and others you don't have only chose a shure.
A good working vintage Receiver, some good speakers and again upgrade when you are able.
Start small but smárt. You don't have to go crazy at the start ease in, patience will prove out.

Keep asking questions and go carefully.

His serviced PL-112d with Ortofon FF15XE MkII cartridge & new stylus was $150
And he bought a Harman Kardon HK3400 receiver for $100
He's going to wait a while on speakers to gather funds.

And am I missing something here? The reports I'm reading on line and comparing it with other turntables (including JVCs) I've had contact with of the same age range, weight, etc, indicate that the QL-A51 is not a really fantastic turntable. For example:
