you missed out on another turntable that you really used to like and you don't feel any regrets about it.

i've (sort of) stopped looking for another table when i got my sony ps-x65. it's been a joy listening to it and even just looking at it i've really stopped looking for another one. i missed out on a really nice denon dp-47 with a denon dl-110 cart this morning and i didn't feel any pang of regret at all. i obsessed about finding a nice one for a while. i guess i'm on my way to contention. well, i'm still looking for a decently priced sony ps-x75 or denon dp-59 but i feel i can live without searching for the ads for another table at this point.

how about you? when did you know you've already found THE one?

I keep reading where my TD 166 Mk II is not as good as other Thorens TT's, and everytime I listen to it, I smile. Bought it for 50 bucks in the late 80's and I haven't ever wanted anything else. Sure I look, but I will never switch.

I've got a td 166 mk ii too! Why do you say people think it's not as good as other thorens tables?
 
Break it up gentlemen...."I can hear at home." I hardly ever go audition anything. It's setting the hook. The last time I did that I came home with a 1966 Chevy II....never again....snort....

These are great turntables! I once talked to a repair guy who thumbed his nose at them. He cited the material of the sub-platter and the bearings. It is a way different feel. The 166 subplatter is way lighter than say a 160. But I must say the results out of the speakers aren't so different. I chalk it up to a bit of snobbery. I would recommend a properly balanced TD166 to anybody.

had a '65 deuce, 331 motor, Hilborn inj.....ran 10.70s in the early 70's...... AHRA
 
... you spend a couple weeks coming up with a fix when it starts to give you grief ...

Been driving my Mitsubishi DP-EC10 for 35 years now, so I guess I can cut it a break when it breaks. <G>

Auto drop went out of adjustment and I had all sorts of fun getting it right again. Doesn't look any different, but it's back to doin' it's thang again ...

I finally found my true love with the Kenwood L-07D. But I still adore the Micro Seiki DDX-1000 and Pioneer PL-630. The latter I tend to use more often,cause it's right in front of my main listening chair... Nothing more relaxing than chillin' out to a few early Zeps or Sabbath's with a brew in-hand.

It's been said that they aren't the same quality as other Thorens TT's, are less desirable, etc. Can't prove it by me. Mine is 35+ years old and as I said, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
 
I knew that I fell in love with my two tables (Dual CS5000 and Hitachi PS38) when I quit looking for something else--and I've been through some tables over the years. They are both (to me) aesthetically pleasing and solid performers--not TOTL by any means, but "good enough" to play to my satisfaction. The bulk of my vinyl collection is either stuff that I bought new years ago, collections that I have bought or had given to me by people bailing out on analogue, or used stuff that I find randomly on the cheap--so I don't feel the need to spend $10K on a "really nice" table and then another few grand on an "appropriate" cart. Not disparaging anyone that wants to go that route--it's your money and your ears, and if I had all "pristine" vinyl, I might go there as well--it's not a matter of the money, so please don't put me in the class of people that only "poo-poo" high end gear because I can't afford it--I can/would if I thought my collection would sound that much better for the investment, but I am happy with what I have (at least for now).

I think you're reading too much into the comments, but it's also a fact they're not up to the level of a TD-160 for example. Many TD-160 (though not all) have the larger 10mm main bearing, cast subplatter, slightly better arm and different, more durable material for the top plate (which is entirely cosmetic...) - essentially a TD-165 or TD-166 is a TD-160 built to a lower cost. It doesn't mean they're bad turntables and most people who've owned both seem to think the actual difference in sound quality isn't very big, yet they're not built as well as the better models and there's no way around that. Whether you care about it or not is up to you :)
 
You know you're already in love with your turntable when...you couldn't stand listening to it due to it's speed fluttering, but keep it almost 40 years in storage anyway because it was too beautiful (and heavy!) to sell. I just recently got around to futzing with it and got the flutter issue fixed. What is it? A Luxman PD-441 with a Grace 707 arm, Shure V15-III cartridge, and a Jico SAS stylus. Getting back into my vinyl collection after many years of digital dankness.
 
.......when you buy a bottle of PlastX and lovingly give the top and sides a quick polishing (even tho they don't need it), pull the platter and run a Magic Eraser around that outer lip to shine it up(my fave is my PL-600 Pioneer) and then stand back, and admire it.......

without it playing a thing.
