Young people, none of them are into hifi.

Until my daughter was in her late teens, she showed no interest in audio. My 10 and 11 year old grandsons have no interest in music; so audio means nothing to either of them. Since my daughter moved out of the house during her college years she has not had any audio system in her life. We are looking at around 13 years.

I dropped my child off at College this last weekend with a computer and i-phone. I remember when I got dropped off, the most important thing I brought with me was my stack of records and my integrated stereo record-player-radio-8-track player.

One of my four children are into HiFi. I've set my son up with a nice system.
Now that he has bought a house he wants to setup something in his garage. He was given three CDi-1000 crown amps recently. I have a preamp and speakers for that system. He got me back into vinyl a couple years ago. I bought a better turntable for him last year and he has my old collection of records.
He will bring over new albums to listen to and we swap stuff to listen to also. But none of his friends are into HiFi.

Yeah same, the whole stupid heavy setup had to come along with me in September 1988. Good lord it was a schlep. I had a load of fun with it tho. I am envious that a much smaller thing today may make as much volume. I mean it really was not about ultimate sound quality as much as volume and bottom end. On the “youths” end of things, I just cannot comment. They consume it differently than I did because there are different and smaller devices. Headphones are more common. Seems there is an awful lot of streaming in the 14-20 age range, so they aren’t a gray and music-less gen.

Well, to even it out, I don't give a crap about phones, Facebook or Twitter.

I have a modest smart phone (Samsung J2 $60 new). In todays world it's very convenient to have cell phone access. I don't have a Facebook or Twitter account. For playing music on the go I use an AGPTek Rocker 2.

I honestly do not know anyone that is even mildly interested in hifi music. My kids and you all on here are about it.
That's pretty much my experience as well. It just isn't as much of a thing with people as it used to be sadly.

we had my girlfriends' family over one afternoon, including seven grandkids ( teens and preteens)...I asked the kids, " ya 'll wanna hear what music really sounds like?".........stuck a cd in, cranked the volume some......they coulda cared less......

Young people have always followed the popular thing to do, but intellectual individualism has all but disappeared. No longer are those that followed the beat of a different drum. But, even that description is too wide to be a reality. There are those even if it’s quite rare that are rebuilding automobiles and stereo equipment to suite their own needs out of necessity. But, most that rely on others to do things for them at a younger age are lucky to afford a good pair of headphones for their phones. There aren’t enough people involved in doing things with their hands and their minds at the same time, then there isn’t many young people relying on themselves to obtain what they want. Then your not going to walk into a college dorm and hear a stereo war going on either.....just better headphones and a digital source that may be approaching HIFI !!!!

I have tried to get my boys into the audio hobby. They both love music but do not care about a hi fi system. Their phones and earbuds work for them. They both play instrument and have even suggested music that I Have gone out and purchased because I really enjoy it (Tame Impala for example). But listening to Vinyl version of tame Impala does nothing for them even though they admit it sounds much better on my system than in their ear buds.

I moved 4 times in 5 years of college. After that, 3 more moves before I had my first house. For each of those 8 moves, the first thing brought into the new digs was the stereo system which got set up pronto to at least power a set of speakers and a TT so we'd have tunes to move in with.

My daughter has a nice Marantz receiver with a Technics TT and she might use it once in a while, mostly streaming. My son will get a vintage system when he moves out this summer but I wonder if he'll use it very much. I don't really know why they didn't gravitate to it. It wasn't for not trying.

Yep. First thing to set up after a move were the tunes.

And I bet most of you didn't even read the linked article about a young guy who designs and builds tube amps and speakers and works with some very interesting audio specialists.

Go back and read the article. I know that doing that is going to get in the way of "The get off my lawn" attitude towards young people among a large group of curmudgeons here.
