Your Favorite 5U4 and 6SN7 Tube

Do have a set of Bugle Boy 6922s to roll in. Will give them an A/B with the JAN Philips after I finish with the GE/Tung-Sol comparison. Am beginning to think that the SLI-80 is simply a good sounding amp. Like you, I'm enjoying it a great deal. :thmbsp:

Yes I have a set of Jan Philips 6922 as good as these tubes sound I found the bugle boys to have better sound, But hands down the best sounding 6922 I own and that sound incredible no matter which 6Sn7 brand or 6550 brand I pair them with, are the siemens 6922 with goldpins!
Yes the SLi80 is simply a stunner when it comes to sonics! I love mine daily for hours on end! :music::banana:

Just rolled in a set of the 'Winged C' 6550s from the St. Petersburg plant. Just a few hours thus far, but have a great sound. Very detailed and a nice, liquid/warm mid-range, which is why I prefer the 6550 to the KT-88. To my ears the 6550 has the better mid-range.

The Pope 6SN7GT from Upscale Audio is the best I every heard bar none at any price in My SLI-80 I love them so much I have 3 sets of them. In the 6922 spot I use the EAT 6922 best by far I have tried them all.

Thanks for the links and your input. Looked into ordering a pair of the Pope 6SN7GT's, and it looks like Upscale Audio won't sell these tubes unless you are buying an amp from them. I don't care for that policy, but it's not up to me.

These. Outstanding bang for the buck.

If you read the blurb on the UA site those 6SN7s are just standard Phillips Holland 6SN7s branded Pope for a particular market. Upscale sells good tubes, but they have made a career of shrouding their tubes in mystique. Invariably, according to their marketing, the best sounding tubes always turn out to be the rarest most obscure tubes ever made.

Personally, I buy 6SN7s on epay without respect to brand whenever I see them cheap e.g., $10 or $15 for NOS. Dozens of different variations of the 6SN7 were produced and nobody has heard them all. Buy a variety cheaply and see which ones you like in your equipment.

The best 6SN7 is the one you like in your circuit.
I haven't found the glowing tributes entirely accurate.
What I like is system dependent. There is no universal superior tube.
They're tools for a job.

Vintage 6SN7's are plentiful and relatively inexpensive compared to most other tubes.
Keep rolling until you find what suits your system the best.
I've acquired a nice stock of 6SN7's and my rolling experience lists the GE's as being at the bottom with most any vintage Sylvania and the RCA Red Based 5692 at the top.
Again, your system may say otherwise.
