Your Greatest Audio Find (Garage Sale, Craigslist, etc.)?

What was your greatest audio find (at a garage sale, flea market, Craigslist, estate sale, street corner, dumpster, etc.)?

Here's mine:
About ten years ago, I was walking east from the Metropolitan Museum of Art toward the 86th Street subway station on New York City's Upper East Side. It was dusk, cold, wet. Sleet was falling pretty steadily. I was heading downtown for an art opening and dinner party. In the middle of the block (82nd or 83rd or 84th Street), between Madison and Park Avenues--stacked in a neat pile at the curb for garbage pickup (all UES garbage is well organized, nicely stacked)--I stumbled upon a white, custom-made, flush-mount 1960s-era audio cabinet, trailing torn wires, as if the equipment had just recently been ripped from the wall. Everything was covered in plaster dust, which, because of the sleet, was just beginning to puddle. Inside were an original Marantz Model 7 preamplifier and a vintage Scott tube tuner with a matching Marantz faceplate. Next to it were two Marantz Model 9 amplifiers. I ran to Park Avenue, hailed a cab, and rushed back to pick up the treasure. Then I stored it all in the trunk of a friend's car until I could cab it all to my Brooklyn apartment later that night.

If you're wondering, I strongly considered getting it all restored for $3,000.00, but opted, instead, to sell it all for $10K.

Happy Hunting

Bushikan Welcome to AK.. Found a Phillips CD-60 CD player for 5 at a community yard sale. What you found was just insane that it was just thrown away. So what do you have now?.

Thanks, NAD80. Back then, I had modified Klipschorns and vintage SS McIntosh amp, pre, and Modafferi-updated MR78 tuner, Sony CDP, vintage Denon TT, and Denon 103 MC. Since then, I've moved on to many things, but now have McIntosh C22 III pre and 275 VI amp and a professional Oppo UDP. Still have speakers, MR78, and TT. I wanted so badly to restore and keep the Marantz Holy Trinity, but could not justify it, since my company's department had just been shuttered. That $10K went elsewhere.

Every year my church has a big rummage sale that nets around 40k. Back around 2000 I shopped around and bought a few random things. There was a turntable there that I know nothing about. Didn't seem to spin. So I decided I'd pass, but go home and do some research. The sale was Friday/Saturday, with half price on Saturday. I didn't get back there till Sunday when the sale was over and virtually everything left had been sent to the dump, but that turntable was still there, sitting on a shelf and marked $30. So I grabbed it for $15. Turns out it DID spin once you lowered the upper platter. Here it is today.

Wow... that's impressive and a reminder that one man's junk is another's treasure (obvious, I know, but a great illustration of that point!).

My scores aren't anywhere near that great... but I did find my Jamo c103 speakers for $320, which retailed at $1800, though I guess that my deal was tempered by the fact that Jamo released these speakers for even less than that, brand new at one point. I can't tell you what model, but I did find a big, vintage Onkyo receiver (about as big and heavy and my Marantz 2270) on the curb in my neighborhood. I gave it to a friend who was building a stereo, who then put just a bit of money into it to get it running well. It ended up having some other problem, which knowing my pal was probably just user error, so he sold it to a stereo joint for all of $70. Someone else gave him a brand new big HT receiver which was a PIA to set up, probably doesn't sound as good and he's had issues with that one as well...

I got my Marantz 2270 from a friend who owed me something like $400 so I guess that I scored on that as well...

Ha! Great find! If I hadn't been running late that evening, I'd have stood on that rainy street all night waiting for them to drag out the rest of that vintage rig (Thorens 124? Quad ESLs? etc.).

Found the Pioneer Spec system in my avatar by luck back in 2012.................guy I had bought a vintage equalizer from had someone try to sell him this (he was a thrift store owner) but didn't want more stereo stuff since the equipment he had took forever to sell and took up valuable space he said. Told me to contact this guy to "get him off my back since he's calling me every day" - paid $270 for the entire thing - no speakers but everything else was in great shape.

Some years ago when I was still living in Colorado Springs I helped my son in law go pick up some "old stereo stuff" that the owner, a man in his 80's was giving away.
Garrard 301 with Fairchild arm, pair of Fisher mono tube amps, tube preamp, and tube tuner. It was all built in to a custom cabinet that was being disassembled. Speakers were gone so don't know what they were.

It happens.

Mike

My finds pale in comparison to you guys. I don’t have any incredibly valuable funds, but I seem to manage to get relatively decent things at a discounted price fairly often for some reason.

Scott S-11’s for $35
PE 3060 turntable (I’ve read somewhere it’s basically the build equivalent of a dual 1218?) for $80 with dust cover, stacking spindle, and in working condition. Didn’t even need a new needle for a long time. Only downside were the rca cables but those were easily replaced.
Pioneer PL-12D-II completely rejuvenated with a Nagatron 195IE stylus and compatible headshell. No dust cover but I found one soon enough. $80

These are probably my best finds. I dropped $200 on a pioneer SX-838 that turned out NOT to be restored as they advertised. Easily would have been my best find. But it’s been restored now, lesson learned.

Luck is on all of your sides apparently ;) congrats.

My most recent was a charity yard sale score of a Fisher CA-880 amp paired with a pair of Klipsch (china)Synergy B-3's for $30 a couple years ago. When I saw those, I started researching their worth when a guy running the show said"thirty bucks if you want it all!" me not being too cheap said "ok, worth a gamble at that price." All good to go, those little speakers sound phenomenal & their low-end I just can't believe for a bookshelf-size speaker. Also, I'm sitting on a pair of Klipsch KG-4's that came almost free. Not in use currently, likely need x-overs rebuilt because I thought I was gonna smoke 'em last time I hooked them up to something with some grunt. Probably going to move them on at some point.

I found a pair of Dynaco A-25's with Connected to a Fisher SS receiver, about 50wpc forget the model # in an electronics recycling center in Portland. $45.
A Yamaha C-4 in great condition again from an electronics recycling center in Santa Clara with a few knobs missing. Got them to reduce from $50 to $40.
Both recycling centers deal in used industrial equipment and really did not know what they had.

I've been lucky enough to find a lot of great stuff at garage sales. $50 for a Pioneer SX-1080, $5 for a Marantz 2230, and (if I remember correctly) $9 for a Sansui 7070 (which came with a Sanyo TP-825D turntable and a pair of Pioneer Monitor 10 headphones).

I've scored a lot of turntables, but the ones that I've kept are a Technics SL-1200 Mk II, a Sony PS-X70, and a Marantz 6300. Those were a little more pricey - $180 for all 3 (different purchases).

Mint Pioneer PL-71 with all accessories at a small town antique store (embarrassingly small cost). A Pioneer PL-514 with an Ortofon OM-10 cartridge and the table's original and intact box, change back from a $20. Also a mint pair of Klipsch KG-4 speakers in walnut (yes, at the same small town antique store) for an embarrassingly small amount of money (they also took a check).

A pair of Pristine Bozak B-4005 one I use for my center channel. A Mcintosh MC 206 when I started tri amping my main speakers. I now use it to power remote speakers. Another might be an Ampex 300 high speed duplicator master deck that I converted into a 300-4 mastering recorder player. It could handle 1/2 inch 14 inch reels with no problem and rather than having a puck driven capstan it was belt driven.

An Aesthetix Calypso pre for $25.00
A Bryston 10 crossover and Celestion SL6Si for $20.00
Mac MC 2255 $300.00
Linn LP12 with an Ittok LV/2 and Troika $20.00
ProAc Studio 100 $40.00
Mark Levinson 432 $350.00 (needed work)

Most were post 2008 financial crash thrift finds when loads of stuff was being offloaded on them, and they had no idea. One was from here on AK.

Those are the top deals I can think of.

I consider this my greatest find ever. AB International ER2500LX power amplifier - 550wpc@8ohms,900wpc@4ohms
My crown macro-tech 2400 a close second that i found at a recycling center.
Found the AB on craigslist for $30 bucks from a retired musician,3 hour round trip, totally worth it.
